Thanks to everyone that helped me with planning how much veg to grow. I now have a lovely plan ready and can't wait to get started on my plot. Only one thing holding me back - 5ft of weeds!

I really need to cut them down, but can't seem to get hold of a strimmer (Can't afford to rent one). Someone did offer to do it for me, but a month on it hasn't been done and I really don't want to pester them!

If there is anyone in the Tring area that could lend me a strimmer I would be very grateful!

Or maybe I could try using a scythe?  :-\ Has anyone done this? I expect it is very hard work, but then again I only have a half plot.

Oh Emma, how I feel for you!!
I was in the same situation in June and if I owned a strimmer and lived nearer I would be right there!! :(
I am sure someone on here will come up trumps, or may know someone who can help.
While I was waiting for mine to be done I went round cutting the flowering heads off all the thistles etc, thinking that it gave me something to do and would save me more weeding long term!!
My stuff was chest high and very scary looking, but now I have stuff growing and have even been able to give radishes away!!
Dont lose heart, it can be done!! ;D ;D ;D

Funny that - my nephew said to me today that I should use my 'cutting things' to get rid of the weeds. He meant my secateurs! Bless! I have visions of how long it would take me to do it that way!  :o

I might have to start beheading the thistles!  ;D May not help, but at least I will feel like I'm making use of my lottie!  ;)

im in wing just up the road from you have got a strimmer you can use but on holiday Saturday but back next sunday your welcome to use it if you can hold of that Long.
if so send me a message & we can sort something out

EmmaLou

Wow - I didn't think it would be that quick and easy to find someone in my area on this forum with a strimmer! ;D

I might be borrowing a strimmer from someone in Hemel (typical get 2 offers at same time!) - If it doesn't happen I will definitely take up your offer!

We borrowed the lotty association one.  Members just have to pay for the fuel  :)   It was a really good one and not too heavy but my OH wouldn't let me have a go  :(  He's a bit like that  :(  Anyway it was a sweltering day and he was soon regretting his macho impetuosity when the sweat was pouring off him and his tongue was touching the floor  ;D ;D ;D  I never offered to have a go after his first refusal  ;D
I came, I saw, I composted

If the weeds are just grassy (ie not brambles or tough stemmed) then you can add me to the offers, as I've got a line strimmer (not brushcutter) and I'm just down the A41 from you in Chesham. However I'm not about this or next weekends.  Could do evenings though.

:( I bought two yes two (one at a time) recently, with the first one the head decided not to work in synchronisation with the engine, ::) then I bought a brush cutter, that leaked petrol almost dripping down my leg, but I had cut almost all of the lottie ;D

Lost interest after that ;D

EmmaLou

Lots of people have told me that they bought petrol strimmers only to return them due to faults!

Moonbells - if the offer is still going...

I have checked the weeds - no brambles, just thistles and grass as far as I can tell. Will it cope with thistles?
Any chance of using it one evening this week? The offer from Hemel isn't happening (strimmer not working!) and Tell is on his hols.

PM me if possible.

Back of hols now EmmaLou its still here if you need it just let me know.
