Hi smyler,    You could try this site :- www.gardenadvice.co.uk
and search "field bindweed". That site gives a description of the
plant and ways of controling it. LesH

You could wrench it all up which could mean exertion or leave it where it is and touch some of the leaves with glyphos on a rubber gloved finger. Don't get the glyphos anywhere else though.  To help thicken it up so it doesn't drip you can add fairy liquid  :)  The glyphos works on the green parts of the plants so if it's got plenty of leaf on it then it's ripe for killing  :)  You don't have to do all of it - as long as some of the plant gets some on it.  Or you can spray glyphos but you have to be really careful as the drift from it will kill everything including hedgerows and neighbouring produce. I don't spray it as I don't like using chemicals but I do sometimes water it on using a red watering can I keep for the purpose as I have ground elder and I'm having to use glyphos to try and eliminate it.  The ground elder is winning by a mile  :)
I came, I saw, I composted

Flipping bindweed!  >:( >:( >:( I hate the stuff too!
My plot is infested with it. My plan this year is to try to dig it out in the winter, and in the mean time I am pulling it up as it pops up in the hope that this will weaken the roots.

Have also done 1 and a half beds with weed control fabric. Still have to weed, but only in the cut spaces!

I know this is going to make me sound sad, but I get a real buzz each and every time I dig over an area and pull out those white roots.

Almost with out exception I say something like "that's one small step for mankind and one less for bindweed kind" as I throw the roots onto the burn for Britain pile...

Couch Grass etc don't have the same effect on me..

Soory, but I just had to share this..

I'vegot mine out (almost) by digging.I won't use chemicals, and killing it by pulling the tops off all the time takes for ever. It does weaken, so it will die eventually. but it's like battling the mythical Hydra, which grew two new heads every time Hercules knocked one off.

I am digging out loads of couch, bindweed, thistle and dandelion.  I cannot afford to lose all that organic matter so it is going on a compost darlik that I will not touch for 2 years - except to water and to turn, in the hope that I can turn it back into useful compost.

Have you tried a good couch infestation, one where you can gradually ease a rhisome out of the soil to find it is three foot long?

Trenchboy

Spastic couch on my plot as the longest I have found is just over 12 "

Bindweed winner is on the roof of my shed and was 47" long, and broke several times as I eased it into submission..

Field Horsetail roots are up to 2 feet before they break and hide.

Ecstacy!!

Hi all, this is my first post so please excuse me if it all comes out wrong! When we started our garden, after 7 years of complete neglect, we had bind weed all over it but after a year of regular digging and removing it has definitely improved. We still get bind weed but I dig it up every time, pulling out as much root as I can but I dont put it in the compost, just in case it returns! Anyone got any ideas on removing brambles? We have dug up loads but they still keep popping up.

Robert_Brenchley

Keep digging if you don't want to use chemicals, and be ruthless. You do get there, though it's deep rooting once it gets established.
