Hello all...

I have been searching online for recipes for larger cakes for cake sales and fund raising days where I work.
I am totally useless at maths and I say this because I did come across a web site that gave a formula for sizing up cakes but I panicked and closed the page down!!!!!!!!! Every recipe I have uses 7-9 inch tins.
I was hoping that someone might lead me in the direction of a really good book or a web page that would help me out.
Heres hoping...

if you double up the recipe quantities you should get a sizable cake that fits the 14" tin but to be honest you might find it doesn't cook well in the middle unless you use a tray bake tin.

try goggling tray bake cakes they are easy to cut up for fetes and fairs.

I have been making Pam Corbins Big cakes all summer using a  9 " tin they are great recipes very reliable might be just as easy to cook two smaller cakes than one big one.

hope that helps

I have to say that I do the same sort of thing Nora!

Just double or maybe triple the quantities in a normal recipe for your biggest tin - and have a contingency small cake tin or cupcake cases to make sure you don't waste any if you've made too much mixture.

It will need longer cooking for the big tin though - exactly how much is never easy to guess but for a half hour bake I would generally up it to 45 minutes and then test with a knife to see if it comes out clean.  Covering the top with foil will stop a big cake from drying out at the top or burning the outside.

Good rules of thumb as follows:

7" to 12" Multiply recipe by 3
7" to 14" Multiply recipe by 4
9" to 12" Multiply recipe by 2 (it'll come out a little thicker)
9" to 14" Multiply recipe by 2.5

That assumes that the thickness of the cake stays more or less the same, which is sensible to avoid undercooked middles.

This info about tin sizes and advice on cooking is on the BBC Good Food website which also has some tray bake recipes - http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/conversion-guides#cake-tin
