Hello, I'm tentatively dipping my toe in the water here and introducing myself.

I'm based in Newcastle upon Tyne and have just been offered an allotment today after 3 years on the waiting list.  I am so excited but also very daunted.  I've been growing veg in pots and containers for a few years now but need to start thinking about how and where to plant different crops in the allotment.  I don't even have any idea as to the size of it as I'm not seeing it and getting the keys until Friday morning.

Anyway, hello and I'm looking forward to getting to "know" you all soon.

A big welcome to A4A.  I got my allotment two years ago and now I am hooked.  I hope you enjoy your plot as much as I do mine.  Lots of help and encouragement available on this forum.

My favorite book is VEGETABLE GROWING MONTH BY MONTH John Harrison. It's a basic book no glossy pics... but gives you all the information you need.

Hiya, milliekat, welcome to a4a  ;D
our fave is Bob Flowerdew's organic bible. Btw, if you want amazon books, you can order by going through the link at the top of the page  :)

Congrats on the new plot!

By fave my fave book is Carol Kleins 'Grow Your Own Veg', although this year I've kind of re-discovered my copy of Andi Clevely's 'The Allotment Book' as well.... :)

Hi Milliekat :)

I'm in Newcastle too. Where is your plot?  I'm up in Throckley but live nearer the town.

Only my second year. Allotments4All is definitely my first stop for info and ideas  :-*

Good luck with your plot - don't buy too much stuff at first - it can be all too tempting....  I've got lots of spare seeds if you need anything?

Get a compost bin going asap!  and let us all know how you're getting on :)

P.S.

Newcastle Libraries has most the books mentioned here and also 'the half hour allotment' which I thoroughly recommend (but is not worth buying as it's a quick read!)

welcome and congrats
its my 2nd year on an allotment me and hubby were very excited and very excited to get going but as soon as we saw allotment and saw how big it was it was like ohhhhh what have we taken on and seemed to forget all the basics but after a week or two we where hooked and you just fall in love with it!
we lucky we only live 5 min away from ours and just go how a walk up there just to have a look! many people are very friendly with lots of advice which is great!
so enjoy it and let us know what its like once you get your keys!!
but if its a mess dont worry you we soon get on top of it  ;D

Hi and welcome millie

We're in our 2nd year on our plot. It's hard work to start but very rewarding.

My book suggestion is "vegetable and herb expert" by Dr Hessian
If it's not on fire it's a software problem

Hi Millie and welcome to the madhouse  :P
Go to the top right and click  Allotments Amazon Shop  for your books, Harrison, Hessian and Cleverly are all good books
The best advise apart from here of course  ;) will be your fellow plot holders and see if you can find out what was grown where on your plot last year.
Get a compost bin going and compost your weeds as you go along

MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

Hi Millie & welcome!!

I used to have a lottie in Whitley Bay, but now grow in garden as did not have enough spare time (two young kids,

full-time job etc. etc.), so have been growing in my garden & using pots for past 3 years.

You will find that this site contains lots of good info & plenty of experienced peeps to answer all your questions

We've all been newbies - so don't be afraid to ask for advice!!
