how small a mesh do i need

having pinched Laurens idea about covering my veg plot with netting predominantly for keeping the cats off but hopefully will help to keep the cabbage whites off how small a mesh should the netting have for the best results

I bought some green netting last year with 1cm mesh.  that kept out pretty much everything.

1cm mesh wont keep whitefly out Debster. Fleece is probably best for that.

I got some very fine door nets from Lidl, thinking that might keep carrot fly off me carrits......I looked at them yesterday only to see about 4 houseflies in there >:( Well if they got in the carrot fly will too.........sigh

I think debris netting will keep out the carrot flies or very fine net curtain material... take a look in the charity shops for curtains. Or ask on freecycle  ;)

we use fleece to stop carrot flies, debris netting to stop cabbage whites and pigeons, haven't managed to keep the whitefly out :-\

What is debris netting, please?  Woven? How big are the openings?

I always thought debris netting was too open to stop Carrot Fly?

But my main concern is that, having bought a lot for this year, the attachment slots will allow Cabbage Whites in? They can squeeze through the overlap in 2 sheets of mesh!

Didn't realise there were slots until too late.

Can't you stitch the gaps? It does seem a shame its not perfect, but a little adaption could make it impenetrable for the cabbage whites.

Just a thought.

Is it the one with slots down the middle Tim.  The stuff I got onkly has slots at the side - useful for pegging it down.  I am going to buy some 3m wides tuff this year and suspect it might have slots down the middle - but I suspect the plants I will put it over - sprouts and psb, will probably be small enough for the 2m while the Whites are still flying.
