Roosting Pouches

Recently sent off for a free wild bird 'kit' (from Gardeners World Magazine). Included was a niger seed feeder, seed packets of wildlife attracting plants and a 'Roosting Pocket'. This is made of a soft, natural material and looks to all intents and purposes like a nest box. The blurb with the kit though says its for roosting not nesting.

I am looking for some advice on positioning this roosting pocket, bearing in mind it may also get used for nesting in next spring.  My garden faces south east and I have a group of large pines at the top of it, 2 of which have feeders attatched to them. Most prevailing winds are from the south west here but the garden is most exposed to north and east winds. I am considering attatching the pocket to one of the trees, this being the area where the birds tend to congregate most.

Can anyone offer any advice on this please? What aspect should the pocket have and how high should it be placed?

Thats a new one on me GA, is there any chance of a picture?

I think any siting of nesting boxes should be directed away from prevailing winds, if its hanging in the tree maybe west facing then, that way it would still be afforded some shade by the foliage in spring and summer.

But surely west would be into the prevailing wind?  ???

I have a couple of Roosting pouches and placed them well inside a tree (conifer)  facing South.  Think they get used??

I thought I had read it wrong, but GA says the prevailing wind in his garden is more exposed to north and east winds......if it was in mine I would put it the west given the same conditions of course.

Yes the prevailing winds are from the west or south west, however what I meant was that we are quite exposed to the colder north and east winds and are relatively protected from the provailing winds.

I hope this clarifies things.

Havent got a pic at the moment but if it will help I will sort one out.

In that case I would still say west then.....

The picture was just for interest, I havent seen a nesting pouch......intrigued.
