Found this lurking in the dark up the allotment tonight.. this was planted from a packet of wellington sprout seed..

The rest of the row are fine, however this one went a bit mad..

2.2kg - the biggest sprout eVaar!, and bigger than any cabbage i've grown for a while too.

Its actually the top of a sprout plant, you can see some more normal sprouts at its base.. also inside there seems to be some sprouts developing too.

I'm about to eat some of it in 10 minutes - i'll let you know if it tastes like a sprout too!

A first?

Send it to Marshalls - they would be interested & sympathetic?

keef

Well i've left the rest of it in the ground to see what happens, there are some more normal sprouts on whats left.. can you let them go to seed ?

 :o :o :o WOW :o :o :o

I want one of those!!!! Sprouts and cabbage(ish) all in one! It would mean I'd be able to have a smaller brassica bed.

Let us all know how it tastes.

Now we just need to think of a name for this wonderous new variety.  ???

Sprabbage? Cabbouts? Keefage? Brussells Keefs?

keef

Tasted like a sprouty cabbage.. not as strong as normal sprouts - but a deffinate sprouty flavour very nice with mashed spuds, gammon and brown sauce  :P - question is will it be as windy - time will tell  ;D

Eeeeeuuuwwww! Keef.....too much information!!!!!

Just checked with my seed supplier (my Dad) and he says the seeds originally came from DT Brown, not Marshalls. I've sent them an email..

Fantastic keef....it will be interesting to see what they have to say.

As long as they dont want royalties from any seed sales, eh? ;)
I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

Sorry to throw a damper, but that is a good example of fasciation. Sadly it does not  come true from seed, but occurs as a result of damage to the growing tip by either insect of something. It is not a genetic mutation, rather a physical deformity. Happened a lot this year to other plants.

mmm.. could be - but the rest of the plant looked different aswell, the leaves were much bigger than the other sprouts and a slightly different colour, the whole plant is shorter too..

It should be an F1 hybrid - maybe in the making one of the parents crossed by accident with somthing it should'nt have, a cabbage presumably..

I gave some seedlings from the same batch  to a mate down the pub - he did mention a couple of his looked a bit funny too - i hav'nt seen him recently, but i'll pop by his allotment somtime and have a gander at his.

Fasciation involves a growing tip which divides uncontrollably. There's no evidence of that in the pics.

Montgomery sprouts are well known to be vigourous  :o and this could apply to the tops as well meaning they get quite solid especially if the ground they've been grown in is exactly to their liking - cherish the bonuses  ;D
