Well all this water has done some good Tim see how clean they come out  ;) ;D

I would say it was well worth the wait wouldn't you?

tim

kitten

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened

Sparkly

does carrot fly look like black tunnelling around the edges of the carrot? Some of my carrots have this, but some are fine.

tuinman

Tim, I sowed mine round the same time and I've been eating from them for months now, got a nice variety this year called vitamin carrot, fast growing and very sweet. and my main crop is now ready to pull ;)

Sparkly, yes that is definatly carrot fly, my crops have been devistated over the years. I tried planting onions round them last year but it never worked, so this is what i have now, glass round the sides with fine plastic mesh over it all. no carrot fly this year :)

hippydave

ivr just come back from the lottie with some lovely sugarsnax that ive had under fleece but the other carrots that ive interplanted with onions are staring to yellow and when i pulled some they are infested with carrot fly tunnles so much so that they are stating to go rotten so i gusse its fleece all the way for the next planting.

Sparkly, yes that is definatly carrot fly,

I have carrot fly then!  :-[ they do not seem to have infested all the carrots though. The carrots are about finger size. Is the best idea to pull them all asap and eat the decent ones? Will the decent ones just end up infested if I leave it much longer?

tuinman

yes, all will be lost if you leave them. I've made that mistake before :(

flossie

they look great - enjoy :P

Tim those look soooo fat and tasty!

Re Carrot Fly; I've only been hit with it in my soil sown carrots and I think that was my fault for pulling a couple to see how they were doing.  aparantly if you graze the leaves as you would when pulling it attracts the fly and she lays her eggs.

All of the one's I planted in a plastic bin (up higher than the fly can get to - more than 24" off the ground) have been fine and are sooo sweet.  I pull these to thin them and eat them as baby carrots right there and then!

Will be planting more in plastic bins when I get more bins and will save the soil space for other stuff :)
