Loads of bricks - What to do with 'em?

Hi all

I've been doing a spot of DIY over the last 12 months, and one of my biggest mistakes was buying a pallet of bricks from Wickes that were the wrong size  :-[. Anyhow, I'm now left with roughly 300 bricks (maybe a little less), and I'm reluctant to dump them at the refuse center.

Doing a forum search, I've already come up with the idea for a water butt stand which is neat. I think I could use a few more to firm up the base of the shed, but that'll still leave a load. I could use a few for holding down netting and what not.

But, has anyone got any good ideas for the rest?

Maybe a little path in front of the shed. And, build a cold frame. I'll do some looking into cold frames, as I'm not exactly 100% sure what they are/look like.

Tim, you could build a rectangle of brick walls and pop a couple of old windows on top, or a wooden frame with polythene nailed on, or corugated plastic, whatever you can get hold of cheaply and easily.  Maybe someone has a photo of something similar, I don't.  If you don't cement the bricks then it would be movable too. just an idea.  T.

Good for holding down black plastic etc. If you don't want to keep them, pu them on freecycle- they'll soon go!

I'm in Warrington David, and I don't really want to sell them, just want to get use out of them. I've already got an outside stone fireplace/grill (and a gas barbie for that matter).

I frequent freecycle daily, but again, I want to get use out of them. Cold frame without mortar is definitely a really good idea. That plus a stand for a water butt and a small path infront of the shed should see the bricks off nicely.

My vote would be for a cold frame, mines was built of spare breeze blocks many years ago.

Are they waterproof? Most bricks are fired at low temperatures, and disintegrate when they get damp, and then frozen. for anything like a path, you need bricks intended for the job, which were fired at higher temperatures.

They are engineering bricks, designed to build houses with, so I'd hazard a guess at them being up to the job. Maybe wrong though  :-\

Use them to edge your paths, thats what i would do.

My vote goes for path edging - keeps everything real nice and neat - and a cold frame!  ;D

My dad has today used his surplus of bricks to build a windbreak by his tomatoes, not used any cement so they can be reused later.

don't even dare think of getting rid of them.

i demolished a brick wall (that went under the deck) and offered them on freeserve.  no takers and now all of them have found their way around various bits on the plot for all sorts of things.  i'd have been well gutted now if they'd have been taken.
