Hello to all,I have just joined this forum but have been reading the posts for some time.
I got my allotment last Friday (Braughing in Hertfordshire) which measures 80 ft by 31ft and is currently covered in foot high grass and is harder than concrete. I started digging it over Saturday and spent 6 hours digging over about 2 square mtrs. Have hired a large red rotavator for Friday :-\
Can i ask how big/large is a rod which it seems is the measurment used for allotments. :)

Thankyou in advance

Paul

welcome to the site, paul..can't help you, I'm not old enough to remember poles etc..hope someone can help, happy growing  ;D

Thanks anyway, just curious as to wether i have a full plot or a half plot. As i have been searching around for an allotment i have noticed lots of different size plots and am not sure if i am entitled to all the ground i am just about to dig up.
The site i am on has about 15 plots but half are currently under a playing field and my one has not been worked for ten years or more so borders are not clear.
Its strange that the town where i live(5 miles from my plot) has a 3 year waiting list with so many vacant plots just down the road.
I will take some pictures on Friday before i dig it all up.

Same as a perch or a pole, 16.5 ft. or 5.5 yards
Smile, it confuses people.

Sounds like about a two-thirds plot. (Our is 25ft by  55ft and I think I worked out last year that this was about half the norm for plots outside London.)

Thanks for the info, i think i will check with the guy who let it to me before i did it all over.

While it is your job to clear and cultivate the plot, marking it out should be the job of the appointed agent for the site. May I suggest that you start work at the known border and just keep going until you have as much as you can manage. As the site is run down the  agent will either not notice or make you stop or charge you a bit more for the extra. Don't plant anything of high value on any known overrun.

Hi Paulg and welcome to the nut house, if your rotavating you will have to dig out all the roots that have been chopped up, happy digging.  ;D ;D ;D
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

Plots sizes are usually 5 rods or 10 rods. A 10 rod allotment is actually 10 square rods in area, that is 10 x 5.5 x 5.5 = 302.5 sq yards (253 sq metres).
I worked your measurements out roughly and make your plot about 8.1 rods,if my maths are correct  ;D.Hope that helps. :)
