Is it just me who is stupid ???

I have just spent  an hour and half in the greenhouse, sowing seeds. But half of that time was probably wasted because I fiddle about with sticks poking at pots and trays in case there are any spiders !!!!!!!

I have loads of pots but rather than get out the ones I really want, I go for those I can see are free of cobwebs, or else cautiously lift things with a stick just in case !!!

Please tell me I not alone  :'(

Believe me Nepeta you are not alone. I hate the awul things but I do find that I can just about cope if I am wearing gloves. Just cant stand the idea of them managing to crawl onto my hands(am shuddering now just at the thought of them.)Have to say that I dont have that many in the greenhouse but you should see the shed :o
Take time to stop and smell the flowers.

budgiebreeder

I have Spidusgigantica in both my greenhouse and outhouses.I once actually caught one eating cat food in my kitchen.fortunately i can pick them up and put them outside. It's the slimmy ones i cannot stand frogs newts etc.
Earth fills her lap with treasures of her own.

Palustris

What a bunch of sillies you are, scared of spiders indeed. Frogs and Newts huh. Now if you had said Earwigs (shudder), But only in the house I can just about deal with them in the garden. Unless they go on me. Then I am out of there!!!!!!varooooom.
Gardening is the great leveller.

Mrs Ava

I hate spiders, but can just about cope when they are outside where they belong.  Many times I have picked up a seed tray or pot and there looking at me is Mr Spider-from-Mars staring up at me, or even worse, running right for my throat!  I try not to think about it, the time I can spend in the greenhouse is precious and never long enough.  Now if there was a wasp in there, I would be long gone and not returning until Ava had given the all clear.

....(says in small voice)...I do find talking very loudly or singing whilst doing your potting puts the creepies off....kinda warns them you are coming, after all, aren't they more scared of us than we are of them?   :-\

ina

Earwigs!!!!! I stopped growing dahlia's because of them. Brrrrrrrrrr.

jethro

I visited an alottmnet holder down the lane and he gave me some pots etc, he opened a sack of old pots in the shed and found a nest of rats !!!!!!! i don't mind them but these ones would give a tiger a good fight  :-\ , they were bigger than an elephant. Naturally being a tough geordie I was out of the door like a shot, John just picked them up and threw them out  :-\ that man is now my hero  ;) .

Ragged Robin

I likes them all.......but I is wierd!

Quite happy to volunteer for de-bugging duties.
Happy gardening, Robin x

jethro

Hi R_R, hope you have a gun for the rats, you'll need it, they are BIG  ;D  ;)

aquilegia

funny really, I can't stand them in the house - hubby is always called for spider removal (my hero!) but I'm fine with them in the garden. I suppose the house is my territory, but the garden is theirs (and I'm happy to have them in the garden eating all the pests!) But I must admit, when I've found huge spiders in my pots, I tend to kick the pot or poke it with the end of the broom from a distance and then leg it until it's legged it!
gone to pot :D

Gardengirl

My absolute nightmare is ants (especially the red ones) :o  If I happen to disturb a nest while digging, the little b*****s are up your arm or all over your feet - they are so quick-ughhhhhhh :o :o
Happy gardening all...........Pat

aquilegia

The only crawly things I'm creeped out by are daddy long legs/crane flies. yuck. horrid things. flittering about all over the place - makes my skin crawl. Especially as it means I can't leave windows open on late summer evenings.

Used to have a major phobia about beetles (one crawled over my bed when I was a child) but since I've found out that they eat slugs, I've grown to love them!

ps - BB - frogs are not slimy, they are just the cutest little things.
gone to pot :D

Ragged Robin

Jethro,

Like to use big stick so I can feel them go splat!
Happy gardening, Robin x

jethro

Hi R-R it'll have to be a big one or they will take it off you and hit you with it  ;D ;) . Can you tell that i hate rats?  ;D

campanula

frightened of bees and wasps - used to be really bad - i could not touch a piece of paper which had a drawing of a bee or wasp on it! As a gardener, this is a bit tough but copable. Several times, i have abandonned my children to their fate - i actually threw my two year old to the ground when a wasp landed on him! shameful. Another time,my daughter was being slowly stung on her leg by a bee - she was shouting 'mummmm! and.......i ran away!
I can manage as long as i can see an exit but if all else fails,my strategy isto pull my T.Shirt over my head so i cannot see anything then crouch into a tiny ball and wait for rescue. My son had to escort me home with my shirt over my head as we were surrounded by something that just looked like bees - some sort of June bug infestation - i allowed myself to be led home, oblivious to any bemused glances. No shame in public either, have been known to pass out in fear, rip clothes off, try to hide in someone else's coat even.
Spiders don't bother me tho'

rosebud

We have a spider in our shed we have nicknamed WEBSTER  :ohe is so big needless to say i do not go in the shed unless i bang and clang very loud first then its in and out as quick as possible,i would never kill it. Earwigs i really hate they scare me witless.
rosebud.

SueT

I can cope with anything except flying ants....uuugh I hate them  >:(
Sue

aquilegia

I kinda like flying ants - they are always a portent of hot, spicy weather and even a thunder storm  8)
gone to pot :D

Mrs Ava

I know what you mean Aqui, and they all seem to fly at the same time, all over the place!

Thought of another thing that I try to avoid, dogs!  yup, scared rigid of anything bigger than a westie, and I wouldn't willingly go and pet one of them either!  Been bitten a few times, ended up in hossy after one attack, put me off for life.  Good thing is, don't tend to run into many dogs in the shed, but I guess that is why the lottie fox spooks me a bit.   :-\

mysticmog

I'm with Campanula on the bees and wasps thing - bees I can deal with slightly better (cos they're pretty n fluffy) but wasps!!  What purpose do they serve?  How dare they have multi-sting abilities!

I hate mossies too, but luckily u dont get many here - I hate the was they creep up on you and zzzzz in your ear, then disappear, and do it again just when you'd forgotten they were there...and I'm allergic to them

Spiders are same problem - scare me senseless - I start sweating and shaking and have to run run run away...

I do like mice, rats, snakes and snails though, and worms...love worms.

Peas xx
