Sorting through seeds last night, I discovered that I owned 7 different types of pea seed. I got my allotment last year; I've yet to sow any.

Have 15 different types of tomato germinating on windowsill and 17 varieties of potato.

Please tell me I'm not alone. Are there self-help books or support groups for people like me?
For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.

No, you are not alone, Bupster.  I have 18 varieties of toms, 75 plants at the last count!!!

Support group?  This wonderful site and others are all the support you need!  ;D

Heldi

Erm...not veg but I seem to have accrued 29 pots and trays of dahlias.

Mrs Ava

You are perfectly normal.  We would be worrying if you only had one variety of pea!  ;D

Surely it is the range of varieties that make our 'hobby' so rewarding, using the limited choice of varieties available at supermarkets ...

So to me, having several varieties growing at once or in succession is perfectly normal, the only limitations are the sheer practicality of how many plants?
The impossible is just a journey away ...

Jimmy

Too right. Also, have many people had experiences where one variety has been an abject failure whilst another has been really exceptional?

That said, 18 varieties may be a bit excessive for my small scale patches, but I do run to 8 tomato varieties - mainly cherries. Perfect snack materal once they ripen for my daughter on those sunny garden days.

Amazin

Help! What's wrong with me? I have only one variety of pea!   :'(

Oh, hang on - 6 types of squash, 7 different chillis...

Phew! That's a relief!

Carry on.

Err.. only one type of pea (do sweet peas also count?)
1 type each of 3 varieties of bean (does that count as 3 or 1,1 & 1?)
2 types of toms
2 types of squash
1 type of potato and I can't even remeber what the bloomin things are called.
2 types of marigolds (3 if washing up gloves included) due to number of beans hoped for
about 5 types of poppy, none of which are opium bearing, I discover...

Bupster, you sound normal, I'm the wierdo

Meg

Don't think you can ever have too many. We are a nation of stock pilers. :)

I've lost count of a lot of mine, but...

20 varieties tomato
4 each of chilli peppers, sweet peppers and aubergines
at least 10 squashes (I only have room for 4 plants!)
about 4 courgettes
7 each of peas and beans
about 6 varieties of potato
about 30 different herbs (just the annual ones!)

oh heck... and I don't even have an allotment - this all has to be squashes into my 6mx8m garden!
gone to pot :D

Quote20 varieties tomato
:o :o

I thought my four varieties was a lot!  ;D ;D

Dan :-)

I've got four different types of carrot and I don't even like carrots.  ???

It wouldn't be so bad, but I'm still clearing my plot. There's nowhere for the damned things to go. My OH says I needn't bother planting, I can just spread out the packets like one of those mosaics in Roman villas.  ::)
For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.

grawrc

On the strength of this thread I've ordered another 15 packets of assorted vegetable seeds. ;)

Val

;D ;D ;D I am so glad you're all as normal as me, especially Aqui, I don't have an allotment either ;D, I've got seeds shooting up in every pot imagenable and all different sorts, I haven't a clue where I'm going to plant them, I just cannot resist buying and sewing seeds, I guess we're all addicts.

The thread on lettuces in Edible plants made me realise that I hadn't got much else than Little Gem - had to rush off an order to Simpsons and added one or two other things whilst I was about it   ;D
So comforting to know there are like minded people about  :D

Rose.mary

I bet the seed suppliers are laughing their socks off, and running all the way to the bank.LOL ;D ;D

Rosemary

By the way I have 4 large boxes of seeds goodness knows where I will put them all, never mind finding the time to sow them all. :P 8) ;D
