This poor little mite is being nursed by my friend. He was found in the gutter by her house, in shock, and has a yucky eye infection. She's bathing it with warm saline solution, and has given him water, dog food and a warm bed!!  ;D  Hopefully he'll be fine after a few days TLC.

I hope it's been well dosed with flea powder!

hedgehogs are great slug controllers so better to release in your garden or lottie. i had the unfortunate of finding a hedgehog in my pond sadly drowned and then the same two days later so i'm now in the process of fillling pond in and turning back to veggie plot.
hope your friends little hedgie recovers

Hedgehog fleas are a species specific species (try saying that when you are drunk).  Unlike cat and dog fleas, they are not interested in any other animal.

Sorry to hear you can't spell when you've had too much to drink RC.  You must practice more  ;D

I love hedgehogs and I hope this one recovers and eats every slug in sight  ;D

This is true. I took down a bird feeder that dispensed whole nuts, because of advice against leaving whole peanuts out during the nesting season. I put the feeder under the frame of my old plastic covered greenhouse (without the plastic) and was astonished to find that it had been knocked over and there was evidence of something having been eating the nuts. With this in mind, I left the feeder where it was as it was obviously providing food for something.
Just last weekend, in the early hours, the cats were showing a great deal of interest in something outside the patio doors. Upon investigation, it turned out to be a hedgehog eating the peanuts ;D

I have a tiny garden and do my very best to encourage what wildlife I can, so I am ecstatic that we have a hedgehog. He appears to be an adult male, as he's large and mature looking. I'm going to try to make provision for his hibernation, although I realise he may not choose to use the spot I provide.
I've left food out every night since I discovered him visiting, and he's been back every night ;D
I'm leaving him crushed up peanuts, a bit of dried fruit and some dry cat food in a little tray, and a supply of fresh water.

I do hope that the little 'pig recovers, Di ;D

They're one of my very favourite little animals.........

Well, he's doing fine as you can see !  ;D

Got a healthy appetite and his eye is much better. Almost ready for release. I've begged and begged to adopt him, but finders keepers I suppose!   ;)

Btw the hedgehog flea is specific to its host, as RC said.  A spray of toxic cat or dog flea powder can be fatal to a hedgie.   :( The fleas do jump onto your hand, but don't bite and jump straight back off again !!   ;D   So, don't let them put you off handling an injured hedgie.    ;D

Awwww what a nice end to a sad starting story !  :'(

A lot of hedgehogs drown because ponds are built too steep, and do not allow for wildlife to climb out of the watre, should they have the misfortune of falling in.

It is a good idea to put down some bricks or something which will allow them to climb out easily - A very good job done there Di !
When he/she has recovered, she will indeed make a good slug catcher and keep the garden clear of pests !
;D :D
Enjoy today to the full.  You are not sure of a tomorrow.
