Hi All

The weather forecast for Surrey this week from bbc.co.uk/weatther and weather.co.uk is currently showing temps down to 2 and 3 degress over the next few days.  I thought that anything below 4 carried a frost risk.

This would be very bad news  :'(

Do you think its possible we could have a frost?

Reassurance please!!

Adrian

Yes, they said on GMTV this morning that we may have a few frosts this week  :'(

We have had frosts into JULY!!

spacehopper

Oh dear. Which plants will suffer most with a frost at this time of year?
Make the most of today, because you'll never have it back again.

Diana

I've a feeling we had light frost last night.

Which plants suffer most? - all of them!!! I think the more tender/fragile the more likely damage. Outdoor toms, lettuce, seedlings + new transplants. Robust stuff like cabbage etc should be alright I think.

Phew - none forecast for this part of Essex.

Plants that might suffer, well, your spuds could get blackened, your toms and squashes could be killed altogether if it is a heavy frost.  Your corn will get a serious check and tender herbs like basil may well be lost.  Brassicas and roots I think will be fine.  I also find lettuces, once growing, do not seem to mind a cold snap - it might make a few of the leaves go slimey, but I just pick them off.  And don't forget your tender bedding plants and tender bulbs and tropical plants, all at risk!  :-\

If you have fleece, get it on where you can.  And pop bottle cloches might be handy over the corns.

Gadfium

I put the tender stuff out yesterday.

I am currently spewing some very colourful words in the direction of the BBC's useless weather forecasts.

The rest of the week looks pretty warm on the Tmin if the forecast I read is correct.

This is a good weather page

Wind speed, temperature, rainfall & cloud cover all on one easy to read graph for 3 days. Again showing Tuesday night / Wednesday morning much warmer. Just hover over the locations on the main map and the graphs on the left hand change.

Crumbs, its so much easier when its on the telly with a big clouds!

Still a disparity between sites, I think the overall message is if they get through tonight then they'll have a lovely week.

Fingers crossed!

I've got a plastic sheet pegged to the canes round my runner beans (which I planted out on Saturday >:(), and I'll chuck an old towel over my spuds.

I've just put my bay tree out into it's container, too, so a bit of bubble wrap might be called for :-\

Merry Tiller

My 2 Bay trees have stayed out for the last 3 Winters with very little damage, they're tougher than you think

legless

mine are taking their chances because

1. they were outside for 2 weeks before planting out so should be hardened off.

2. if the worst comes to the worst, most tender stuff that i have can still be sown again.

3. my next door neighbour has promised me there won't be a frost...

bunnycat

Mine's just a baby........ :'( He's not even a foot high, yet :(

Seriously though, I'm sure you're right and he'll be fine. He's been outside hardening off for a few weeks, and I've just popped the bubble wrap round him when it's been really cold :)

Hope nobody sustains any damage, if the frost does turn up :-\

Metcheck says 2 degrees in Bedfordshire but no frost?????????????????
