Picked our first strawberry this morning, shared with my partner, didn't tell the kids.
Delicious, I've never grown strawberries before.

Kits, I saw a programme that said they gassed strawberries to get them to ripen, put me right off! :(

I have a few green strawberries i noticed yesterday but what are gassed ones, sounds painful

dont like the sound of that......at all..i know the dutch  have a reputation for irradiating fruit for longevity..i dont know how true this is-can our dutch friends enlighten us?

this is my first year with strawbwrries-in a big tub at the moment,but i have lots of fruit on them-next year i shall make a permanent bed for them wwith this years runners..

That looks like a really good netting system.  Nice and tall so that it is easy to get underneath to pick. Is the structure just garden canes bent over or are they something else?

Sorry folks, I don't know anything about irradiating fruit, I've heard about it but that's all.

Our lottie is in Hoorn, Netherlands.

The netting? Simple, on two sides the net hangs over the rabbit fences and on the other two sides over rope between posts. The net gets 'pinned' to the fencing with 'pins' of bamboo stick pieces and on the other side I lay posts on the netting that's on the ground. To keep it from sagging in the center, I use plastic tubing they use for electricity wires in walls, stuck in the ground. I did the netting the same way for the broad beans.
