The nearest tree is right in front of our house (sorry, no summer picture available)

but it won't be there much longer sadly.

Every other tree on our side of the street is to be chopped down, thanks to a petition of our street for the city council (NOT signed by us b.t.w.) complaining about lack of light in summer.

What a shame Ina!  That is just dreadful!  Tree lined streets are rare and gorgeous, in my opinion anyhow!  Is there nothing the residents can do??  Petition.....press....?

busy_lizzie

That is such a shame Ina.  When we moved into our street it was completely tree lined too but gradually they are being knocked down also.  People complain that they are ruining the drains, but our neighbour complains that she keeps having to sweep the leaves up.  It is such a pity as they bring lots of birds into the street and lovely greenery.  It was  a much pleasanter Street with our trees, -  they make you feel better for just being there.    When they knocked ours down outside our house (they said they  had Dutch elm disease) we insisted they planted two other trees in their place which was our right.  Unfortunately not too many people do the same as they prefer the space so they can park extra cars on. I think we are poorer for not having them.   busy-lizzie

Clayhithe

Milton road in Cambridge was lined with the most beautiful spring blossom trees:  a wonderful sight.

'They' proposed to cut them down to widen the road and make a bus lane.

The resident raised a huge protest:  chained themselves to the trees:  generally made a big fuss.

The trees are still there:  'they'  changed their minds.

People still matter,  if they speak up.
Good gardening!

That's just it EJ, it's the residents that started the petition to have them removed!
The reason they want the trees removed is that they block too much light which is true but that's no reason in our view to chop them down.
Some came around to our house asking us to sign the petition but we kindly declined, sadly too many did sign.

you know-i think people would concrete the world if they could......they are obsessed with 'tidyness' and a 'germ free ' existance-they are so far removed from connecting with nature  and the earth that there is no hope for them.... :( :( :(
i think it ought to be made compulsory that people have a n allotment and be fined if its not cultivated..... >:(

I live in a tree lined road and people are always moaning about them. They were planted in 1910 when my house was built so I say 'If anyone was here before them you have a legit reason to moan, if not, why move into a tree lined road? They are here to stay, get over it.'  >:(

Its not as if the council dont cut them back. This is what they look like at the mo.......

A street in Whitley Bay had all its trees chopped down as the roots were actually coming up in people's kitchens in the houses nearest the pavement - to be fair the council did replace with new trees and took the opportunity to pretty up the pavements, but it will look oddly bare for at least a decade!

ina

Ooooh Maz, that tree looks fantastic. To think it's almost a century old. Can you post a picture later, one that was taken in summer with all the leaves?

kitty

when me and the oh started living together we had a council house in a lovely tree lined streetthere were only 40 houses in all...-the houses were built for ww1 veterans coming home and the trees were a mixed variety of fruit-cherry pear apple.....and ornamental with one or two ash thrown in-it was a delight to see all the blossom.the fruit what there was of it wasnt much cop but it made you feel lovely-
i think the whole shebangs gone now..... :(
i've just planted about 30 various trees where we live-so theres a copse of them on wither side of the bottom of the garden.....we may not see them at their best-but someone will! ;D

Ina it is here the same story,i worked for the council two years ago,we had the same problems.I dont know if you have ever been in my town.We have a road from the center of town, straight to a castle.!.Ten years ago the started to cut down the oak trees, some of them were more than 200 years old!!!!!!!!.As a boy i had to ride that road om my bike to my football club, remembering the arch those, oaks made in summertime. You could not see the sky above your head.Reason for cutting them down,to much and to hard to have them kept maintenanced.Got already p***d again.

:o How spooky Maz your tree looks like a Zombie I thought it was waving at me when I first saw it :o

maz

You're right Roy it does!  ;D  Hmm... maybe that should be my entry for Photo of the Month for May, although its a bit blurry through DG isnt it?  ::)

They look awful for a while but they soon fill out again.

Rudd I think thats it with trees, so many generations have looked at, admired and appriciated the same tree sometimes for hundreds of years until someone gets fed up with it and whoooosh....... its gone.   :'(   >:(

That's just awful. awful awful.

People are so selfish. It just makes my blood boil.

And Ruud - I can't believe they would chop down such old oaks. grrrr.

I admit to being a tree lover. I nearly cried when my neighbour had part of the oak tree chopped off (in someone else's garden, but grows into hers). It looks so lop sided now. but at least it's still there.
gone to pot :D

kitty

aqui-i'm with you-i would rather even keep a dead tree up than chop it down-lots of wildlife habitat and trees are absolutely beautiful...i think councils are heartless....... >:( >:( >:(
