Allotments 4 All

On my old plot I had a scrubby corner with a couple of horse radish plants growing in it. They were dug up each year as and when I needed some. Then the bits that were left regrew into new plants a bit like a dock will do if chopped up.

I cannot for the life of me find any to purchase, well not a the price I am prepared to pay for a weed. Has anybody got any on here who could send me a bit of root to get me started again.  I have nothing exciting to exchange anymore now my old nursery is finished. Although I could have some Brighstone beans again next year. These beans were originally brought ashore by some old wreckers centuries ago and are still grown in the area and have even been recognised as a bona fida strain. Loads of my friends still grow them in Brighstone and are very unlikely to be cross pollinated with modern strains.

PS forgot to mention I could dig up a wild plant, but I think that is against the law nowadays. Even if it ain't I would be loathe to dig something out of the wild.

I found my horseradish root in the veg section of a supermarket.   I planted it in a tub so it wouldn't invade.   maybe you could find one in a local veg shop if no-one here can help.

I've some small bits of roots, they have been stuck in a pot for a bit though. I just had a look and they are starting to sprout, I'm sure they would welcome better growing. Or once the ones in the garden start sprouting I can find and dig you up a bit from them?

I find all the horseradish to be a bit wimpy.  It fair gasses you when you grate it but then it seems to lack any heat/flavor.  Added heaps to some mash spuds but hardly a tickle.

I would not mess up my mash with it. But beetroot and horse radish put in the blender is  fantastic in a cheese sandwich or with any meat. Liquidised it makes a good dip.

perhaps the heat of the mash (you don't know what you're missing!) is diminishing the horseradish - I do like the sound of the beetroot/HR dip thing...

We don't have a Wilcos over here but as the missus has to work in Pompey next week she will pop in and pick some up. I had a look on Wilko's website. I do believe she is going to need a very large bag when she goes over to the north island. I have told her to nip in and get her favourite shampoo and could she pick up the stuff on this little (folded) list. With a bit of luck she might forget who's money she is using.

Thankyou everybody that offered. I now have some. Just a word of warning, she has to go rooting for so called bargains, can't just pick up what is needed. So now we have some incense sticks labelled 'apple orchard' don't be thinking this will fill your room with  a nice apple blossom aroma. Think of it more like an autumn bonfire in the apple orchard. Should really be named 'smoldering log'.
