Not seen the GW advert, but T&M site says the Polypots are 8L ... I have only grown spuds in bags before (3 tubers / bag) and somewhat larger containers for 4 seed tubers.  This year decided that I would like to try individual pots, so that we harvest more closely only what we need for a meal as I don't like to store New Potatoes (sugar starts turning to starch on harvesting) and I had been planning to ask the local supermarket if they had any flower buckets for sale ... but actually reading your post I thought I might try Polypots instead. A couple of show growers on YouTube use them - Allotment Diary uses 17L Polypots; I was reckoning to need about 10L of compost per spud - mine aren't for show! - so I think the 8L ones you have are on the small side, but perhaps not by all that much

Show growers stand their polypots in shallow trenches, so the roots come out of the bottom of the polypots.  Not sure how early they would start to root through, but if I could grow mine in greenhouse until end of April and them move them outside and risk / protect against late frost I think that would do me. I was planning to start my really early spuds off at intervals from now onwards.

What about 99p black plastic buckets from Wickes? They are 14L and you'd just have to put holes in the bottom.

I always very wary of giveaways but I do still have the green plastic trug that GW gave away attached to their first issue.
