We've grown butternut squash for years, we never save seed , always buy fresh and this year we have this green specimen. I thought it was the only one but I've found another fruit. I assume they are on the same plant but it's hard to tell as my squash bed is rather overcrowded. Does anyone know why this is ? and will they still be edible ?

There are several varieties of green butternut squash.  Barbara is one, and Zucco de Milano is another.  They are slightly less fickle than normal one and set fruit more easily.  I think they are better than the normal ones. They can get quite big.

Just so - seed packet contamination.  Enjoy the diversity

Thanks both, Galina I think you're right as I certainly didn't sow a green variety. :happy7:

It is sometimes interesting to get a rogue.  I had a cousa style courgette once and when the rest got a virus this one plant fed us and I have been growing cousa style courgettes ever since.

a friend on my site has had a green rouge this year in her butternuts and the green one is 22" long with a girth of about 9" but it has a butternut shape and came from the same packet as the rest of the normal butternuts and has 4 fruits on it.
you may be a king or a little street sweeper but sooner or later you dance with de reaper.

hippydave, it sounds liek your friend has a Lunga di Napoli... I grew one once and it remains one of the biggest things I've ever grown, only beaten by a few pumpkins and a truly mammoth Boston Winter squash... it wasn't much smaller than my leg, shaped like a butternut, and green....

Humbug carrot

I have 6 butternut squash plants all from the same seed packet, 2 are round,2 are elongated, and 2 look like proper butternut squash shape.
It will be interesting to see what they taste like.
