Who's been sleeping in my compost?

I emptied one of my compost bins of beautifully rotted compost at the weekend and found the remains of a nest.

It was probably about 4-6 inches in diameter and composed of ripped up bits of plastic bags, netting and string. There weren't any babies, so I'm hoping it was a hibernation nest rather than a baby-making nest! It was right down the bottom of the bin.

What do you think made it? I've seen mice in the compost before. Them? I keep hoping hedgehog - any chance?

My guess is mice too aquilegia. Maybe you need a guardian of the compost like mine?  ;D
A friend is someone who thinks you are a good egg,
even though you are slightly cracked.

I thought that might be the case. But was just hoping for a hedgehog!

Maz - that is such a cute picture! I have plenty of cats that visit the garden, but only to use the toilet (grrr!) I want to get one of my own (cat, that is, not toilet!)

Hi maz, what a darling cat, all snug and warm.  There is a thread 'gardeners and their cats' where you could put more pix of your cat for us all to look at.
