Teasing dogs

A chap came to our house to see my husband this morning and made so much
fuss of our dogs that it was obvious he liked them.

I asked him if he had a dog and he said he did - a Westie.  I asked if it was good-natured
like my Border Terriers are and he said that it was, apart from growling and biting him!  He admitted that
he teased it, so I told him he deserved to get bitten.

I would be horrified if my dogs even thought about growling and biting! But they would
probably be horrified if I teased them....

I just can't understand why people think it's funny to tease dogs.

Sounds like he is taking his teasing too far. Our terrier loves when ever OH does 'teasing' play with her (usually involve lot of belly tickling)..but as terriers have tendency to get over exited and turn it into too rough play, both of them are under my observation when they play ... or should I say "not letting 'kids' play without supervision" :toothy10:
Dogs (and men) soon learn bad habits and turn boisterous if allowed to do so :tongue3:

Did he say how he tease his dog?

He said he puts his foot over the dog's bowl while it is eating which
makes the dog growl at him.
There are probably lots of other things too but we didn't have much time
to talk.

I can take my dogs' food away from them, or toys off them, or treats out
of their mouths (if I could catch them) and they would let me. When they were
puppies I got them used to things like that so we wouldn't have problems later
on and we haven't. They are not at all possessive and have absolutely no
guarding instinct.  Thank goodness.

Uh..that is definately not nice....first thing I was tought about dogs were not to tease them over their food. You just never know what sort of reaction you can get out of even the most kindest of the dogs if they have to defend themselves.
I have always been able to take things away from my dogs without them crowling at me..and during play I do allow little playfull grumbling..but even then I calm it soon as it starts.

I think I would found it difficult to put that man in his place if he would have been talking to me.. :disgust:

I'd never heard Suzy growl until I got a cat. And then only when said cat steals her food while she's eating it!

I don't approve of teasing animals. Play yes - and it's OK for me to take their toys or their food - but they are utterly dependent and trust me totally so why tease them?

Tease them too much and you break their spirit, same as kids. Then they fight back. Too much tease becomes torment , almost bullying

I totally agree, always treat children, animals AND other adults with the respect you yourself expect.

Who said "teasing is bullying wrapped up to look respectable"?
