After going to all the trouble of importing Atora Suet  I decided today I was making stew and dumplings.

Bear in mind it has been 3 years since I could make them.

Carefully I chop, saute, add stock and simmer all afternoon, add my imported gravy granules to finish it off then...

I lovingly make my dumplings as I have for 50 years and drop them in,no recipe as it has been in my head for years. I was so  being very careful not to waste a grain of the precious Atora and was very proud on myself.

Serving time..and I fish out the cannon balls, honestly I could have sold them to the army, they would have cracked the tiles if I dropped one.

So ..OK you all know  what I did.

I used plain flour................. oh eck and John was so excited..

Still the birds will be eating internationally tomorrow.

I still can't believe I did it.

:-X..I could almost cry for you..I bet dissapointment was horrid..Haven't you got anything similar to atora over there?

Can you buy Self raising in Canada? I notice US recipies always list the raising agent seperatly. I've now decided to only use Plain plus raising agent and it seems to work well.
Shame about the dumplings :(

I did the very same thing a couple of years ago - asked a friend to bring some over when they visited, waited for a cold winter's evening to make stew and dumplings - and THUMP!  It's soooooo disappointing when you are looking forward to something so much!

Better luck next time!

I made chelsea buns that looked amazing until you tasted them.I had used salt instead of sugar
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Off topic I know but prompted by earlier posters. When I was adolescent and looking for a prince amongst frogs, my friends and I had this whole thing about 'why cant I find a dumpling in life's murky stew? Why do I always get the gristle?!'

So Jeannine - it might be a metaphor for life! Seriously sorry to hear it - I am feeling so hungry just thinking of stew and dumplings.

Jeannine, i did the very same thing.  I kept looking in the slow cooker wondering why there was no sign of the dumplings, they were sinking instead of swelling into lovely tasty fluffy dumplings.  My husband said don`t throw them to the birds you will ground them all. LOL LOL.
when i make a stew now i put the flour out a long time ahead so i do not grab the wrong bag.
Such a shame yours went wrong , next time perfect ;D ;D.. x

When I was a kid I used to kid my mother saying there were birds in the garden that could not get off the ground.

Big shame about the dumplings Jeannine, but I am sure your language was not as bad as mine when I cooked my dinner yesterday, but I was in a bit of a panic as mine caught fire!!
If there's nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe!

Slight diversion from topic

Does anyone have a recipe for Gluten free dumplings? I want to do a steak and kidney casserole with dumplings in my slow cooker but my wife is gluten intolerant so if i use a standard dumpling recipe she wont be able to eat any of it (and it's the dumplings I want more than the casserole - haven't had them since I moved out of home 4 years ago)

Don't want to ruin a perfect meal with lousy dumplings

Be careful with Atora, as it has flour in it, 15% I think, you would have to get proper suet from the butcher and chop it yourself then use your gluten free flour..

Yep, I am getting old and losing it a bit.........................not..I am planning on climbing a big tree this year, photographs of course.
