Is this real, or a con?

My family were playing games etc. at Christmas and one of them was where someone sits down and four people try to lift him by using one finger, under each knee and each arm.  It couldn't be done. But then they all put their hands on top of his head, press down and quickly try to lift again and the person goes up high in the air!  I'm sure some of you will have seen it and what I want to know is - is it a trick, or if not, how does it work?

It's a party trick, presumably the team are better coordinated the second time after the head pressing thing.  4 people should be able to lift one person without too much difficulty.

But it must be an interesting thing to observe, what did you think when you saw it?

I couldn't believe it Ellen.  They did it to my husband and after the head-pressing they must have lifted him about three feet off the chair.

They all say it isn't a trick and after reading your link to the wikipedia, I suppose I'll have to believe them.

Perhaps the person involved also becomes more balanced. When my daughter has had an epileptic fit she becomes floppy and is totally impossible to lift.  My suggestion is that the target when pressed on the head will tense their body as a reaction.

Perhaps we could have a demonstration when we all get back to our plots. ;D
