Hi all, it's been a long time since I've been in- good to see some familiar faces :)

Below is a link to an e-petition  which needs 100,000 signatures, it is to try and secure a change in legislation for live animal exports from the Port of Ramsgate. Sadly this cruel trade is still going strong - there was a sailing on Wednesday morning in force 4 winds and another one is due to leave in the early hours of tomorrow. If you feel inclined, please do sign and share. Many thanks
Yvonne

What a strange petition.  I'm strongly against importing and exporting live animals for slaughter.  I'd much rather British welfare standards were applied throughout the animal's life, right through to the slaughterhouse.

But why put the onus on the port authorities?  I can only imagine that if the change in the law called for by the petition were to come about, then groups of agitators would blockade the ports and in effect blackmail the port authorities into siding with them.

That's not how I want our legal procedures to be put into effect.  Trade practices that are cruel to animals should be banned.  As simple as that.  But I don't favour mob rule, so I'm afraid that I shan't be signing this one.

Thank you Dan :) and thank you betula, grawrc and Squash64 for signing and sharing.

As I understand it Melbourne12, the port is owned by Thanet District Council who have democratically voted agianst the export of live animals through their port but who are unable to stop the exports because of the existing law as outlined in the petition.

this is a link to an article in the Sunday Times which explains the situation

You seem entirely to have misunderstood or misinterpreted my position.  You'll be pleased to hear that my decision not to sign the e-petition was also entirely democratic.  Proper show of hands and everything.

The Facebook link tends to confirm my suspicions.  There's an attempt being organised to intimdate Thanet Council at their next meeting.  Agitation and "making some noise" isn't a civilised way of doing politics, it is, as I said, mob rule.

The Sunday Times link is behind Rupert's paywall.  Since I don't buy his disgusting newspapers, I see no reason to give him a hundred smackers a year to read his sensational journalism on-line.  But I see no reason to doubt that live animals are being exported via Ramsgate, and I'd be delighted to see the practice banned.  But by proper and due process, not by rent-a-mob violence.

I have yet to see a council intimidated.

Many protests are noisy............as long as people behave can't see the problem.

I remember the PDSA in the seventies running a campaign to stop animals being exported live, thats over 35 years ago. :( Compassion in world farming are also running a campaign.
I've signed the petition, and just hope this practise soon ends.
