Discount shops like Wilkinsons, Lidl, Aldi, £1 Shop, 99p Stores etc sell cheap fruit.  Varieties are usually standard reliable ones.

Hi Gavin

I bought the 12 Elegance strawberry plants that T&M's website are doing for 3.99 and they are good strong plants.

The downside is that they wanted 4.95 as P&P but i bought a few other things (overwinter garlic and their First Early onions as well as some other items) and they only make one P&P charge so it wasn't too bad.

Otherwise, I would ask around neighbouring allotments sites and carboots - you might get a good collection of plants for a few quid.

You could also put up a post on freecycle - you never know.

Good luck - I am also trying to acquire enough plants for a strawberry bed and am beginning to realise that it is a long term project.

Look out for church fetes ,that type of thing.......I picked  up several for 10p each and they are doing well.

If you are still doing this Gavin, Tesco are selling Unwins Temptation F1 strawberry seeds, 75p a packet.  You can sow them now and plant out next spring.  You won't get much until the following year but they seem to be a nice variety and acquiring enough plants for a bed is a long term project.

I've started a couple of packets, will be interesting to see how they go.

Thanks for that...  ;D  i'll go to my Tesco today anch check it out..

i can send you some comfrey root. PM me for my address and i'll sort out how much postage you need.
Be warned though once you plant it you're stuck with it, even if you move it.
