Allotments 4 All

I have a cardoon on the plot, thanks to the gorgeous smiling cat, and even tho it has suffered in the cold, it now has 2 thick shoots growing.  Just wondered, is there anything special I should be doing for it now....feed etc?

the little i know about cardoons is that they are very thirsty, but quite easy managment, relatively pest free also.

I have a couple of cardoons in the garden - just ornamental never quite sure what you're supposed to do with them - but they are hardly pest free - my local snails love them when it's a bit wet - my record was 40 off one plant!!  >:(

AS they stay in the same place for some time and prodcue lots of leaves, the normal treatment for herbaceous plants is a top dressing of FYM/compost and some balanced (organic of course) fertiliser

Thanks folks.  I can now get my hands on some lovely well rotted horsey poop so will put a couple of shovel fulls around it.  I understand it is the stems you eat.  Give anything a go me!  :o

Yes me too EJ - I've got some cardoon seeds. In fact 2 different varieties (well it was a long dark winter and those damm seed catalogues!!) - apparently I need to sown them late April.

A feed would do no harm. My `babies` from the split are ready to go in again -one day I will actually trying blanching the stems.
