Allotments 4 All

Sorry I havent been on here for a long while :(Whilst my parents were away on holiday in september, I went round to their bungalow to water their tomatoes and let myself in to use the loo and horror of horrors water was pouring through the ceiling in the hall. The galvanised tank in the loft had sprung a leak and the new extra thick loft insulation had soaked it up like a sponge till it had no choice but to let go of the water. It was very frightening I can tell you. I got onto their insurance company to initially get the ball rolling and broke the news to them on the doorstep two days later when they arrived back from Devon.
Luckily the damage was mostly confined to the hall which is a central hallway and had leaked through to the other side in the kitchen and lounge. Although a table and chair and mirrors were distroyed in the hall the only other victims were the carpets where the water had run when the hall carpet could take no more water. All the furniture was taken into storage and all clothes and linens taken and washed or refreshed in an ozone room as the damp atmosphere would have caused mildew. Every electrical item was taken to be tested as the atmosphere could cause rusting of the components. The bungalow had artexed walls and ceilings which as some got wet had to be tested for asbestos and then a specialist firm had to remove it all. All the ceilings were replaced and re-plastered the house comepletely re-wired, new alarm system and a completely new kitchen and floor and completely re-decorated. Luckily the new batchroom that they recently had done was not afected. They have been living at my uncles and staying all day with me ND i have been doing their cooking as mum has refused to cook even boiling an egg is beyound her. Everything is back in the bunglaow but that has taken 6 months. The insurance company has been great in what they have done but very slow in paying living allowence and issuing checkes which I have had to constantly chase up about. My mother has been completely negative and moaned about everything, even about things that did not even happen and has driven my dad, husband and me comepletely nutty. She has told everyone that will listen that she has lost everything whcih simply isnt true and been very selfish. She has claimed I am un-caring and un-sympathetic when I wont rise to her bait of moaning about everything. She has literally walked throught my front door every day shouting at me "this is wrong get onto the company and tell them this". I am at home all day as I am ill with Fibromyalgia and have had constant earache for the last 6 months its been crazy.  So now at long last it looks like I am off the hook and can have my life back again. I know this sounds like Iam a moany bit£" but you can only put up with so much negativety. Last year I didnt have a wahsing machine for 4 months while they were trying to get a part for it to repair. I had to wash everything in the bath which is a sunken one I couldnt wring anything out due to my athritis in my hands. I ddint have the moeny for the launderette and my mother wouldnt let me use her washing machine cause I have cats and she didnt want fur in it.  This is the same woman that wanted everyone else to run around doing everything for her. I have had curtains thrown at me and her shouting as I was taking too long in hanging them


And my poor tomatoes got blight in october as I wasnt watching them.  I am hoping to get back to the garden this year and have already started sowing seeds.  Hope everyone is well.

What a horror story - hopefully things can only get better this year & good luck with your tomatoes.

God that's horrible! I soooo wish I will not be like this with  my kids when they grow up!

Thanks to everyone that replied to my posting you were all really supportive. Yes you are right all of you a jolly good rant does make you feel better and I am glad I got it off my chest :)

perhaps your mother can see things in a better perspective now she's home, and watching the terrible scenes on TV of what water on an even more massive scale can do.
