marketmore is a classic for outside. I also grew Cucino last year, and thought they were decelicious, in fact I prefer them to the Marketmore. But I start mine off inside (under cover) first before I transplant them. I grew them up some wire mesh last year, and was very successful so will be doing the same again this year.

One tip I did pick up from A4A was to pick off the 1st flower. In a previous year when I'd grown them I didn't have much success, but picking the 1st flower off really worked, and we were eating loads of cuc's and in fact giving them away!

Maybe someone else on here starts them off outside and can enlighten us further!

The white ones... crystal apple/lemon, white wonder and boothby's blond are good outside too...  :)

I only ever grew Marketmore once outside and they were OK.  Did not get too many but intend to give them another try this year.  I did get loads of Marketmore when i grew them in the greenhouse though.

There are plenty of varieties; Marketmore works well, as does Wautoma from Real Seeds. Get them off to a good start, grow them hard, and don't let them become potbound, I find bought ones are too soft and get murdered by slugs.

well gonna try marketmore then ;D just ordered them i will start them off in coldframe first!

Last year I grew Cucumber Cetriolo Marketer from the B&Q Italian range of seeds. They were very good. I was picking cucumbers right throughout the summer as the outdoor ones were harvested after the greenhouse ones.
dont be fooled by the name I am a Lady!! :-*

Cold frame is good; it's not so hot they'll grow too fast.

Grew one Passandra (smallish type) in greenhouse last year, 70 cropped & Burpless outside, over 50 cucumbers from  four plants - gave masses away -  both types very tasty.

If you let the Piccolo di Parighi gherkins get a bit too big they are excellent cucumbers.....

As Robert says, get them off to a good start before planting out. I planted mine in an area which had loads of manure dug into it, and then I also  mulched with straw and grass later on so that the moisture would stay in the ground.

Never grown cucumbers outside before.Do you keep in pots or can you plant out in soil? ???

Marketmore grow fine in soil for me, I put a couple of spades of compost in the bottom of the hole and grow them just like courgettes. And just like courgettes, I end up giving them away to anyone who stands still long enough...

Robert_Brenchley

You can do either. I plant them out, but you can certainly grow them in a big pot.

I am going to give 'Konsa' from Lidl this year solely because it can be grown outdoors and is supposed to be smooth skinned. Due to white fly, my GH harvest of other varieties was a total failure last year.

Grew marketmore last year, 4 plants which gave me enough. You have to peel the skin though as I found it a little tough.  Flesh is nice and 'meaty'.  I am not growing them this year as I make way for other varieties (crystal lemon and Red hmong {an orange cuc}] so the market more are up for grabs if anyone wants them?

Pm me if you want them

I've also had good success with burpless
