I have not put mine to chit yet - better get on with it.  But the bed is dug over and the bottle cloches all ready.  I also put a plastic milk bottle full of water between each plant.

Bottle cloches ??? a plastic milk bottle full of water between each one???

Why??Do I put the lid on the bottle of water? Won't it all run out??

Please explain I am new :-[

I think thatt you put a bottle cloche over the potato to keep the soil warm.  The bottle of water between the plants is to do the same thing.  The water in the bottle is supposed to warm during the day and let out its heat during the night.  Left bottles of water in greenhouse over winter but with very limited success.  However it was a particularly hard winter.

my only worry about that planting date is that the full moon is on the 18th? so it will be cold, more the seasonal cold anyway as it has been very mild for many of late - but we shall see - am sure we had a longer planting time period last year

Thank you another mystery solved! A lot of people on my site put coke bottles on sticks around their plants.Thought they were to scare the birds!! :)

They probably are, but I don't think they're very effective. Dangling CD's are better. Best of all is netting, and coke bottles are good here, to stop the netting sliding down the sticks.

can I have an extension please teach for doing my homework  ;D cos it's raining and very cold and I won't be planting anything this weekend but maybe Tuesday - besides I want to watch the cricket  :P

shirlton

We won't be planting our spuds either Kev. Praps we will get a good day during the week
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

cornykev

Too wet here as well and it's going to rain all weekend, well peeps you'll have to plant as soon as you can, good luck all.    :( :( :(

I put bottles on sticks to stop me having my eyes poked out when I bend over

Mortality

I cant get out to plant mine, the back door is wooden and warped shut.. ::)
Please don't be offended by my nickname 'Mortality'
As to its history it was the name of a character I played in an online game called 'Everquest'
The character 'Mortality Rate' was a female Dark Elf Necromancer, the name seemed apt at the time and has been used alot by me over the years.

I won't be putting mine out either. I showed a guy round the site yesterday and of the four plots I had to offer him, two were under water!

Think I'll leave them chitting in the spare bedroom for a few more days.

manicscousers

ours are in, 3 in the hot bed covered with a cloche and 2 lots in leaf bags covered over, home guard  ;D

Yours sounds a good allotment site!

cornykev

I got myself 3 toy tubs and a recycle bin
Dalek compost in one
Manure in the 2nd
Leaf mould in the 3rd
And a mixture of the three in the last
All topped with soil and covered
If I'd have remembered my spuds I'd have been away
The ground planting will have to wait.  :'(
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

calendula

setting a good example then  ;D

I planted my one potato
Bless its little soul
And just as I was told to
Filled up the great big hole

Arran Pilot is its name
I hope it grows and grows
'Cos I want to win this game
To cure my potato woes

In taking part in Corney's challenge
We become a potato dude
But he's not here much to manage
'Cos he's banned for being rude  ;D

So Arran Pilot do your best
And heat up this competition
Then we can have the best spud fest
Good enough for exhibition  ;D  :P
