Midges in August spoil the Highlands.  The first week of May is the last occasion before the female midges start hatching and biting...

It is a beautiful place, but not in August...  unless you want to eat loads of garlic, dose yourself in citronella oil, and wear head nets... and no, I'm not joking  ;D ;D ;D

I have travelled the Western Highlands a lot.

Orkney does not have the midge problem.  Loads to do there walking wise...

Congratulations!

I would recommend Fiskardo on the Greek island of Kefalonia. http://www.google.co.uk/images?rlz=1T4ADFA_enGB355GB357&q=fiskardo+kefalonia&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1003&bih=571

There are lots of good quality self-catering apartments available with gardens stepping down to the sea, and its the perfect place for easy walks, swimming, sailing and lazing in the sun.

Apparantly it can get rammed with posh yachting people in peak season but we went in September and it was fairly quiet - admittedly this was in 1998 though!

EDIT -- just seen that you wanted to go in August, so perhaps Fiskardo would be too busy at that time.

Bubbly Berry

Isles of Scilly. Tresco is Beautiful - fly by helicopter from penzance.

You can fly straight there or do what we did

Fly to stockholm and had a couple of nights at the rival (owned by benny from abba)
http://www.rival.se/

Then the overnight train to kiruna and a taxi to the hotel its defiantly a once in a lifetime experience and you can see the northern lights etc...

i know long haul isnt on your agenda but Borneo is fabulous we honeymooned there.

Another fab place to stay and not too far to travl to is Dubai. The weather is hot, there are absolutely fantastic places to eat there. you can opt for going sand surfing and dune driving, an experience I have to say. Its a beautiful country and its on my short list for taking my 3 year old twins to this year.

Yorkshire Dales - Grassington if you like somewhere cosmopolitan(!!!) or Muker if you like somewhere quiet.  Save the rest of your money to go back for your anniversary.

Froglegs

Get thee sen down cornwall nice any time a year.

I lived in Oban in Scotland for nearly five years.  We had rain on 6th August when we moved there and it rained every day until January.

I agree with what others have said about the midges too.
