We are thinking about something nice and relaxing. Nice accomodation and quite quiet (certainly no 18-30's types). Abroad (short haul) or in the UK. In terms of things to do we like nature, culture, walking, low level adventure activities (maybe like clay pigeon shooting, boats etc), local food. Really looking for inspiration as have no idea at the moment. The time will be the beginning of August and the budget is flexible.

Yes, York is lovely (I lived in, and now near York for a few years)  Has York itself (fairly busy in August with Americans and other tourists though) which is beautiful, the Dales, the Coast, the Moors, the Wolds, even the little known Howardian Hills, etc, etc, etc.  oh, and Bettys musn't be missed as an expensive treat... I am likely to be moving away soon  :( but I will ALWAYS sell the place to people.  Wonderful romantic walks for all abilities, in locations which only locals know about, so remain quiet.

For a short haul honeymoon one place I can recommend which is beautiful is Ravello in Italy.

We stayed there for a week when  a friend got married out there, the scnery is beautiful ,a and there are fantastic places to eat. For culture youve got some lovely villas and gardens out there, and of course youve got pompei only a train journey away. There are also lovely beaches too, not forgetting of course if you are a wine drinker plenty of wine and limoncello.

I have to say I wish i'd had more than a week out there. We stayed in september and the weather was gorgeous.

Lake Balaton in Hungary would seem to tick all your boxes.  We have been there a number of times and love it.  Very unspoilt and apart from a certain amount of nightlife in Siofok all other resorts are 18-30 free.  Nature reserves, sights, walks, good food and wine. Swimming in the lake, hot springs.  Cycle/walking path all around the lake.  Sailing school.  All still very affordable.

YES!!!! i heartily agree about RAVELLO, it is a wonderfull place. Do consider it you will not be disappointed i promise.

We go to ITALY, every year the south is so scenic absolutely relaxing SORRENTO, is amazing which is only 1 hour away.

How about a nice cosy lodge with a log fire and a private hot tub?

My husband and I visit one of these each year and some of them are beautiful, private and very remote but .... not so far away from being able to join in outdoor activities that you have mentioned.

My nephew own's Coastal cottages of Pembrokeshire. One of the most beautiful coastal regions in the UK. Plenty to do via Activity Wales or jusy chill. Other than that OH won a holday in the Algarve last year, villa was okish but the local was to give an arm for. Car essential.

Dandytown

A long time ago I came across vivat.org.  They offered unusual properties in and around the UK to rent in idealic spots.  I have never got round to booking a weekend away with them

whats your budget and how long???
Are you looking for once in a lifetime or just fun in the sun?

Sparkly

Thanks for all the suggestions. Budget is flexible, but I would say up to £2500 in reality. One week. We do want some luxury. Good food is essential as is opportunities for good photography, walks etc. Scottish highlands have been suggested and that seems like quite a good idea. Anyone have an experience up there? We have found this hotel: http://www.loch-ness-lodge.com/ which looks really nice.
