Hi

I would like to grow some small compact cabbages next year (winter and summer).
Can anyone recommend some varieties?

Thanks Duke :)

Minicole and Hispi (round and pointed) but both summer ones. Most specific winter ones are much larger...  :-\

we do greyhound and redcap  :)

My selection is; Primo(summer) Cabbage Tundra  & Savoy Wintessa (autumn/winter) Durham Early for spring.

Must admit I don't grow a lot of summer cabbages, too many other things on the go at this time.

That is things that only grow in summer.

My philosophy is; why take up ground with cabbages when you can grow more exotic things.

Cabbages make a good over wintering crop because of their hardiness when very few other thing will grow during this period so I tend to grow these.

Ninnyscrops.

Greyhound and Hispi fan here, Duchess.

I'm still searching for some I actually like to eat - tried Hispi this year and wasn't impressed, but maybe that's just me  :-\

Duncan for me, can be sown right up to September to overwinter.

strangely enough I was delighted with my Hispi and Greyhound cabbages this year. One is enough for a meal for two and they're always fresh. No great big cabbages lying in the fridge rotting. I'll be doing them again next year.

My Tundra were incredibly large, but almost totally devoid of flavour  :-\

I prefer to grow other brassicas so just grow an occasional cabbage too, so far best for flavour has been Precoce de Louviers from Realseeds, grown from late summer as an autumn/winter cropper.  It's also extremely attractive, with pink edged outer leaves.  They're small if you space them tightly or give them lean earth - I suppose most cabbages are.

Froglegs

Picador which is a late summer/ autumn varietie and Alaska a savoy that i find you can plant out at a close spacing to give smaller cabbages, both from Marshalls.
