Not on my plot, in my kitchen! I have had three or four "ordinary" flies flying around for the last 4 or 5 days- they just will not go! I've used fly spray, sticky traps, leaving the door open and tried to swat them, all to no avail. Doe anyone have any ideas- they are driving me nuts- keep landing on the computer while I'm typing this. >:(

Making sure that the flies are still in the room, go outside and spray the interior of the room with a full 5 or 6 second burst (more if the room is a large one.  The flies should be dead in less that half an hour.  If they aren`t then it`s time you bought some better brand of flyspray.  I use RAID and it never fails.  I spray all the rooms that have been open every night before I go to bed, and hoover up the  dead flies twice a week.  I spray my bedroom at about 8pm every evening so they`re not buzzing round when I`m in bed.

It's Raid that I've used, but quite an old can. Will give it one more try after we've eaten tonight and if it doesn't work i'll buy a new can! Thanks.

Is your flesh rotting ? :P They can detect decomposition from a great distance!

Why???? The stuff is toxic!!!!!

Apart from the odd moth nothing seems to come in here. Although it might explain why all the spiders are so fat.......

Bedroom window open 24/7 in the summer and all day the rest of the year.
A space? I need more plants......more plants? I need some space!!!!

I live in  the country, surrounded by trees. If I had my windows open 24/7 as you do I should have a house full of wasps, bees and flies all day, and pipistrelle bats all night, quite apart from the odd feathered friend  (anything from jackdaws down to wrens and bluetits) which can`t resist the lure of an open window.

They`re all fine and dandy outside but I`m not having the b*ggers in my home.

Use an ultraviolet light electrical zapper.

I had one.  It made a constant buzzing noise which I foiund extremely irritating.  The flies just ignored it and buzzed round the light instead.

I have one of the tennis racket fly zappers from the pound shop and love it, I save the Raid for the wasps.     ;D ;D ;D
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

We use the sticky sunflowers (used to be made by Vapona).  You stick them to the windows, and when the flies walk over them they die.  A company has taken over Vapona, so they are still available, but I can't remember the name.  We have been using them for years.  I suppose the only drawback is you get a few flies on the windowsill. ;D

Rentokil also do sticky sunflowers, but I wouldn't recommend them, insofar as when a fly walks over it sticks to the sunflower.  After a while it looks really horrid with dead flies stuck to it.

I prefer to dust a few flies off the windowsill, rather than have a load of dead flies stuck on the sunflower. ;D

As I say, I can't remember the make of the ones we use, but if anyone is interested I can find out.

I've had these http://www.cataire.co.uk/ for years - they really work!  If for any reason the front door has to be open and a fly gets in I find Raid does the job very quickly and efficiently.
War on slugs and snails!!

Ah well, not long before no flies, until Spring. ;D

I always find a good old fashioned fly swatter works well :)

Tin Shed

We had a load of flies this year and had to resort to one of those long fly trap things which worked well. It looked rather gross, but I suppose if I was Damien Hurst I could call it art and make a fortune ;D

On second thoughts I hope he doesn't read this as I may have given him a good idea for his next project ;D

For fruit flies I cut the top off a 2L bottle and put fruit offcuts in the bottom.

After 30 min I swiftly cap the bottle with a cloth, take them outside near the compost bin and fling the lot out.

Do this 3 times a day for 3 days and they are all gone.

House flies might need a quicker cap - maybe a child's fishing net on a pole.
With a microholding you always get too much or bugger-all. (I'm fed up calling it an allotment garden - it just encourages the tidy-police).

The simple/complex split is more & more important: Simple fertilisers Poor, complex ones Good. Simple (old) poisons predictable, others (new) the opposite.
