Allotments 4 All

Lesson leanrt - had a new shed this year and decided to store my squash crop in there rather than the conservatory, after much nagging about the aesthetics of the squahs in the conservatory. Always thought they looked good myself.

The -12 C we had in Jan and followed by the recent -7 C this past week has seen paid to my squash store. Next year - no matter what the objections from my OH they are staying in the conservatory and when its cold moved to the back bedroom!

I think they look good indoors, so next year deffinately ignore the OH.

What a shame!  Maybe the lack of pumpkin soups and pies will make OH realise the sense in your argument!

I lost a lot of Spag Marrow in the big greenhouse when some muppet left the door open for two days and nights before Xmas... but the main squash survived... more than the Echiums and Swiss cheese plants did...  :'(

I've had a abit of an emergency use-up of the butternuts as several had started to "go" around the stem.... the Winter FEstivals are holding up well, as is the Uchiki Kuri's and the sole remaining Bon-Bon buttercup. For the most part they are in the garage, though a few are in the conservatory being used decoratively.... along with my blue hopi corn.

I keep my squashes on or near the kitchen windowsill. Not only do they keep very well, but on the odd occasion that one starts to go mouldy, you can quickly see what's happening and get it used up before the rot spreads. I think squashes look great indoors. I put mine on the turkey platter that would otherwise only get used once a year.

I once kept a butternut squash for about 18 months. Is this a record? I should add that it was pretty dried out and tasteless when I finally got round to eating it.

We kept ours on the spare room windowsill turned the radiator off but left the door open so that a bit of warmth could get in.Used an overgrown courgette and a Red Kuri from the stock yesterday.

So far I have resisted the OH's complaints about the squash in the conservatory - and these stories are more ammunition to hold off the attacks!
Kept onions and spuds in shed and both have suffered with frost damage though - now there's a challenge to get them in the conservatory next year ;)

Mine are in the spare bedroom despite OH protests - and very pretty they look too ( not many left now.) Very sorry to hear about losses.
Think OH resistance must be getting low - he has actually agreed that tom plants can come with us when we go house sitting in Devon in mid May  :o  :o

I lost a couple of pumpkins but only had four left so not such a big disaster.

Sorry to hear that - I would be pretty upset too.

we also put in the conservatory and they're lasting well. In fact so well we're wondering whether we should give some away (will we eat 30 squashes and 2 bags of spuds before they go off, and if we do, how huge will we be?)

lost all my crown prince and butternuts  :-[ i have a storage shed on the lottie with the pots onions and squashes. went to top up my spuds and all the squashes have got rot as with the onions but the spuds seem ok.
ive now got some silver bubble wrap from work that im going to line the shed with to try to keep out the cold.
