Our box scheme (riverford) has just put their marmalade pack back on their list  ;D

Ive made one batch of marmalade last week which turned out really well so I have just bought another lot of sevilles from our local greengrocer and shall be making another 7lb tonight.....how sad to be making marmalade on a friday evening!!!!!!

Love Riverford, but most of  their boxes double up on our own produce. Shame.

Oh! Tonight - Tesco have finally got them in. Our local grocers threw them all out last year because no one wanted them, & said they would not be having them again!!

ahh well Tim before this time next year I hope to have cancelled them :)

I love marmalade, its such a temptation for my daughter though that can't hace oranges because of her eczema that I feel guilty eating it.

You can order just the oranges from Riverford I'm sure, without a whole box. www.riverford.co.uk Marmalade Kit £3.20 gets you £1.5kg oranges and 2 lemons.  I have no idea if this is expensive or not!

Yup - they're here.  There's one stall in Leeds market that always has them, and they were there today.  We only left the nasty ones :) :) :)

XXXX Rang Tesco 2 days ago - yes, they were in stock - today, went to get them - we had to bin them because no one was buying them!!!

oh no!  And I watched the lovely Delia making marmelade last night on TV!

Sainsburys had what they called 'marmalade oranges' a few weeks back - I picked them up by mistake thinking they said manderin oranges.....sure that optician told fibs when he said I had 20/20 vision!  Don't know if they are still doing them as I generally avoid sainsburys.

That's funny - in the Co-op today, I said that 'these Mandarins look like Sevilles'. Oh no he said.

Oh well - we still have 4lb in the freezer from last year. BUT - they will need different treatment.

So - even Waitrose let me down. So out come last year's, but I've got to figure how much extra pectin they will need - in what form. Or just another lemon for the acid??

Didn't realise the pectin levels reduced after freezing.  This could answer my question late last year when I made my second batch of blackcurrant jelly.  The fresh fruit jelly set like rubber, the second batch from frozen currents produced a soft floppy, but equally scrummy, jelly.

This may not interest you, but,  most supermarkets sell tinned seville

oranges ready to make into marmalade, they are priced approx £1.50 per

tin and are called MAMADE. It makes delish marmalade.   :P

I got into making my own marmalade after buying sugary sweet

supermarket marmalade, which was severely lacking in fruit content

  YUK!!

I am sure I have some lemon variety in a cupboard- shall go and check

and return to confirm  ;D

YES! Have a tim of the prepared lemons variety.

Ingredients are: 67.5% prepared spanish lemons, water,citric acid, pectin.

It has no artificial colours, preservatives or additives.

The tin (850g) makes 6lb of marmalade.

I usually buy mine at Kwiksave but have seen it at larger

supermarkets, and can highly recommend the seville oranges, as

I have never yet made the lemon variety.

If you can't get fresh sevilles it is next best thing and much better

than supermarket stuff :-X

THATS IT !!

All this talk about marmalade has got my tastebuds screaming....

Am now off downstairs to make the lemon variety which I shall be

spreading on thick sliced granary bread for breakfast tomorrow,

accompanied of course with a cup of tea.

Emma - see better picture. Pectin -  much argy on this, so looked it up & found even more!!
But I'm going to add something - not sure what. I see now that it says cook from frozen - oh, dear!!

Debs - yes, a face saver, & your kind efforts will not, I'm sure, have been wasted - there must be others in the same position.

But - I seem to recall, from when my m-in-law used to use it, that it was thinly sliced? And we like it chunky. So we'll have a crack at the snowballs & report back!

In passing, we use a pressure cooker - great time saver.

why seville oranges? you can make equally if not more yummy marmalade using tangerines, and i am sure other citrus fruit.

i have a book at home called 'sensational preserves,' and boy are they!
there are several pages of marmalades of various kinds in there.....

RESULT.

The lemon variety (thinly sliced Tim) is tangy and absolutely delicious.

Tim - The seville oranges are prepared 'thick cut'.

If you google 'mamade' you will see a picture of the tin.

I am fussy about eating a good marmalade and can give it thumbs up!

Svea - yes - there are all sorts - and jams too - but I'm stuck on the fresh, sharp fruitiness of Sevilles. Don't eat much of it these days but, when I do, it has to be what it has always been for 60 or 70 years!

Debs - that's interesting. Maybe we should get a tin or two in, in case I'm so slothful next year.
