All this talk of getting started for the new season got me wondering, what are you still harvesting from the gardens?

I still have leeks, parsnips, sprouts, swiss chard, carrots in the ground being harvested. Just a few onions left in the shed and we have just started the last bag of spuds. The freezer still has plenty of broad/french/runner beans to see us through along with bags of raspberries, strawberries and blackberries. Also a couple of bags of chillies and  about 8 kilner jars of oven dried tomatoes and peppers.

Jerry, I am still gathering leeks, parsnips and swiss chard. From my unheated greenhouse my mizuna, lambs and a few other types who's names I can't remember, lettuces are ready to pick.

Freezer- runner and french beans, and a bag of courgettes that I have no idea why I froze them as we hate soggy courgettes!

Onions and garlic all gone but I did have a bonus last week in that I emptied out a tub that I had pushed behind the raspberries and had forgotten I had sowed some kestrels in it, the result was I got a load of lovely new looking and tasting/old potatoes which were delish! 8)

Still got a cupboard full of jams chutneys and pickles, which we had better start to eat before the next lot needs doing.

Oh and I have about 10 demijons full of homemade wine to get through! ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Lady of the Land

Numerous leeks, grew about 250, just given more away to a family we share lifts with to the local swimming club and have  made more leek and potato soup !

Sprouts, carrots, parsnips, spinich, springonion in the ground.

In the freezer broad, french and runner beans, courgettes, peas tomatoes, raspberries, blackberries and gooseberries - little room left for anything else. It's only my second year and still trying to work out how much to grow of everything to last through the year.

In the garage garlic and potatoes.

How are people storing their chillis over winter?  I tried to dry them and they went mouldy.

This is how I dry my chillies in the living room, never had them go mouldy. You can see the newest harvest is the string on top, the others are already on their way of drying, this picture was taken at the end of last summer. When they are crisp, I get most of the seeds out by cutting them in half and then chop the chillies in an electric chopper. I turn them a short while till they are flakes (not powder) and store them in an air tight jar. They stay good and hot a very long time, even last year's are still very good.

Thanks for repplying ina

Those chillis look wonderful and so many of them. Do you manage to eat them all !

I will give it another go this year. My chillis were orange. Hot Cheyenne F1 Hybrid so I may buy another type to try

I am pulling purple-cape cauliflower at the moment. They were down on the seed-packet as an April crop. However, I expect they to be well eaten by then....

Having my planting scheme for next year done and most of the seed is in, I still have a lot to harvest: about 50 leeks, 2 rows of nice and big parsnips, 10 kale- boerenkool, endives, cabbages, carrots, sprouts, brussels lof. Onions and shallots inside, the same with garlics and about 50 kg of potatoes left.

Winter onions, white and red about 200 and Chinese garlic over 20 to come.
Freezer is getting empty from all different sorts of beans and some fruit.

Most of the days eating from own garden ;D :P :P

Hi Ina - What a beautiful ristra! I'm very impressed. Mine normally dry on the worktop or get thrown in the freezer.

Lady of the Land -  I'd recommend cayenne or thai, for drying and tying as they are reasonably long and have thin skin that dry easily.

No fruit tree knowingly left un-tried. http://abseeds.blogspot.com/

Fantastic chillies Ina!  We still have some perpetual spinach,  and leeks growing at the plot.  At home we are still eating our onions, and I have green beans and rasberries in the freezer.  Have rhubarb and green tomato chutney still left from last year, and yesterday I picked the last of my brussel sprouts and beetroot which I have boiled tonight. We hope to do much better next year in the storing and preserving side of things.  :D busy_lizzie

Leeks, spring onions, ruby and bright light chard, salsify, parsnips, witloof, perpetual spinach, kale - nero and curly, brocolli and celeriac on the plot.  In the conservatory my chillis are still producing, and inspired by Ina last autumn, I strung my chillis and have 4 ropefulls looking wonderful in my kitchen.  Down to the last string of garlics now, which should just see us through to the new harvest.  Freezer has broadbeans, french beans and runners, large selection of soft fruit and lots and lots of apple, parsnips, carrots and spinach in the form of 'sag alloo' or is it alloo gobi..... In dry storeage I still have a few squashes on standby and in the larder a good supply of jams, chutneys, relishes and pickles.

At the allotment there are plenty of sprouts still, also swede, parsnips, chard, kale, a few red cabbage left, rocket is still going strong and lettuce under cloches are nearly ready to use. In the greenhouse I have chillies and baby leaf salad.

Almost at the end of my potatoes, a couple of squashes, and a string of garlic in the shed, and in the freezer loads of broad, french and runner beans, along with green peppers, sugar snap peas and chopped celery. Also prepared soups, ratatouille, braised red cabbage and chard aloo.

In the cupboard I have numerous jars of jam, chutney and pickle, including a most delicious Mediterranean chutney.

Given it's only my first year of growing veg, I'm really pleased.
