Thought I would try to grow this little plant in a group to see what comes of it.

I will try to grow anything and also give it a chance to grow with a range of frames to grow up and along.
It is stood on my home made boot scraper so as Her in doors doesnt shout when I have been out to the garden.

Is it the "black-eyed Susan" variety? I love it but have never had great success growing it.

I managed to germinate 10 of the black eyed susan this year, i'm down to 1 and it's still only 2" tall from april  :o

caroline7758

Glad it's not just me! ;D

landimad

Yes that right the black eyed susan.
Only five survived the germinating stage and that was from two packets of twenty seeds.
Not sure how to keep them or what they require to sustain good growth!

Mine always seem to be very slow to get going, but over the last month they have romped away and are climbing up their canes and flowering.  I never have faith in them, but they always seem to pull through in the end. Just slow.

I will try to let you know how this goes and even try to photgraph it if the camera works for me. ;D

Don't drum me out of the brownies but I have several self seeded ones in the big greenhouse... several already in flower...  :-X

landimad

Saddad,
I have a lot to catch up with you racing away with this.
I am only trialing these as I have not grown them before and found the seed hard to take in a little old cold frame you can see in the gallery. ;)

All,
As promised here is an up date of this plant which I have tried to grow from seed for the first time.

As you can see it has put on good growth and there is a flower on it.
Very pleased so far and wondered if the flowers should be yellow as on the packet.
Oh well, I have to have what is given to me and make do.

Here is the update of the progress on this one.
The flowers are coming along now and there are more coming on all parts.

Mine are still flowering but have gone pale and speckled... I keep looking for red spider mite but can't find any... do they need a lot of feeding?  :-\

landimad

Saddad,
All I have given them is an amount of osmacote to keep them going, and that has been ok up to now.
It is the temperature to keep them at which is the problem. I find that a warm shaded greenhouse or conservatory would be best in my mind.

Too much light "bleaching"  them ?  :-\

landimad

It seems to be working with the shading up. But I still think they are more of a shade lover than a bright position. I will give them a go in various places next time though.

So is it possible that mine have too much light?  :-\

landimad

Saddad,
Looks that way, can you post a picky of it to see?

Went to London at the weekend and they had some lovely towers of them in St James park, bought a packet of seeds at great expense (50p) in their honour.  Thought they would be easy to grow.  You can get them in pastal shades.

You can even get them without the black eye, but no point in my opinion.  What would Susan think?
