Allotments 4 All

I'm a wieght loss freak (17stone down to 12½ in 12 months) but I like my puddings sweet!
I have sweet cicley in my herb patch, and its nice with my rhubub, but I read about stevia. I bought one from our local farmers market today and planted it in my patch. It tastes very sweet.
I've ordered seeds over the net along with more sweet cicley.
Has anyone any experience of it? ???

My grandmother used it extensively to sweeten puddings, and very effective it was too. :) I've only just germinated some seeds, but there was a thread a few weeks back discussing cookbooks etc. (Here: http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php/topic,53663.0.html)

I'll mix it with lovage then, it takes the wind out of baked beans! ;D

it is grown in Canada as an alternative crop for tobacco. it can become invasive.
it is used commercially in many food products, pies, cakes, jams.
it is probably five times as sweet as sugar with 25% of the calories. leaves are dried an crushed to a powder before use.
