They look brilliant Tim, if only my Garlic had turned out like that.
I used mostly ASDA ones, perhaps that's where I went wrong. :'(... :)

Trevor_D

I'd assumed that the garlic was yours and you'd bought the basil from Tesco. (But perhaps that's just the camera angle?)

Don't tell us that the garlic is all from a BOGOF special offer from Tesco?!? When the rest of us have spent a fortune on professional stuff and ended up with nothing as glamorous as that!!!

OllieC

Haha, saw it in the end... the Tesco one is the half sized one sitting at the top!

Trevor_D

So it is!

(The eyesight goes a bit as you get older....)

saddad

I thought that was the alcohol...  :-X

Sholls

Tim, stroke the Tesco bulb gently & remind it that size isn't everything...  ;)

TommyTomato

Wow.....look at the difference in that!!!...(as the Actress said to the Bishop)   ;D

Garden Manager

My garlic is 'decended' from supermarket bulbs and whilst the crop is usualy good and sufficient for our needs, it is never as good either for quality of bulb or quantity of crop as those grown from 'proper' sets. i have been thinking of switching to fresh 'seed' garlic from a nursery for the last couple of years now (but never got around to it - i am a bit of a cheapskate with these things) . Now seeing tim's results, i wonder if i need to.......?

What's the secret Tim, mine is never that big.

tim

No secret!

As always suggested, use only the 5 or 6 big cloves from each bulb for storing bulbs. The rest for Green Garlic or early use.

And this year I did do TLC. They were fed & watered as per the book.

Hi Tim,
Your garlic looks gorgeous! For big garlic heads, I just grow elephant garlic  ;). It's a cheat but it works, hee hee. Had a clove just about the size of a cricket ball last night!
This year it's squash.

i guess the tesco one is the one that rots after a couple of days in the house - generally beforr you can eat it -  because its been chilled so for so long

Mine get bigger every year...someone asked me if it was elephant garlic this year. still better not get too big headed about it as it will make it go wrong next year. I planted the whole bulb even the small ones and they're all a good size. maybe it was just a good year for garlic as I didn't go by the book....mine were starved and droughted!

tim

Given that we've been battling White Rot for some years, we're very grateful for the result.

realfood

Tim, any idea what the garlic variety is?

flowergirl

well blow me!!!

the old boys on the allotment said ALWAYS use proper potato seed and ALWAYS USE proper garlic from nursery!!!

I bought PROPER garlic from a place called Wath garden centre. Paid  £2.99, came to plant it and it had gone mouldy!! salvaged 3 cloves.

Tesco's it is!!!

OllieC

fowergirl - I think Tim buys Garlic for planting, (from Isle of Wight Garlic people?) not stuff from Tesco... and it is more sensible to do this for a number of good reasons. I suspect that Tesco bulb was bought before harvest time?!
