a lot of people outdoor toms are being decimated by blight again this year and i was wondering what size crops do you all generally grow outdoors.

i can fit 12 plants in my garden beds so i grow 12 varieties one plant each.

on an allotment how much do you all aim for?

I had 14 plants, 7 each side of the support in an 8' raised bed. I grew french beans at the same time as I planted the toms, and now the toms are blighted and coming out, at least I have something in their place...... :-\
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

I'm growing just four this year!
My plot neighbour Joe, who's Italian, is growing dozens of various varieties, as he always does, including some in hanging baskets.
Flighty's plot,  http://flightplot.wordpress.com,  is my blog.

I usually grow so many, around 20-30 plants, in pots, all huddled together, but they never do very well. I never want to do that many, but when they germinate well I find it hard to throw them away!!

This year I aimed for 6 and ended up with 7! And was then given 2 by F.inLaw!
I have spread them around a bit more this year, and have only grown 3 Pomadoro, 2 gardeners delight and 2 Red pear. FinLaw gave us 2 money makers.

I only grow them at home, as they never last long at the allotment due to blight.

I have 36 plants covering 27 varieties.  All looking good so far, everything crossed!

Rhubarb Thrasher

i've got 5 rows of 6, and 1 row of 10, plus 2 plants at the plot for a bit of variety. I've sprayed twice and binned 5. About half of the rest are struggling. Downhearted? A little bit

I've got 12 plants this year, 2 black russian, 1 shirley, 1 sun cherry, 2 sweet million 6 gardeners delight. All ok as of yesterday, (fingers crossed!) but they have been sprayed several times, and I've been cutting off suspect leaves.

We have about 30 this year. I know its far too many but we always sow too much of everything ;D
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

We have 12 in the polytunnel - two each of Tamina, Gardeners delight, costuloto Genovese, Black Russian, Ailsa Craig and Crystal.  Outside we have 5 each Legend and Aurora and 10 Super Roma.  At the house we have 3 gartenperle in hanging baskets and a gardeners delight in a pot.

So far all is OK, we've sprayed twice, there is blight on the site, so are keeping everything crossed.

about 30 plants - most on the plot but some in the garden in pots.  Just taken my first pound or so of cherry toms so still ok here.
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

Barnowl

About 25 at home (all outdoors), and only three up at allotment this year.

Just 10 for me (don't be embarrassed Caroline!).  I have 4 gardeners delight and 2 tigerella in growbags, and 3 marmande and 1 roma in buckets.  All are outdoors at home and I am quite taken with the bucket method this year - I think I'll be doing them all that way next year.

No blight yet (shhhh .... and touching wood).  Some nice trusses forming but still green.  Patience .... ;D
Leave only footprints, take only photographs ....

How many do we grow?
When there's blight -not enough
When there's no blight too many
One year even the gas man who came to service the boiler wasn't allowed to leave without a bag of toms and two cues :D

I've got 50 or 60 outdoors on the plot (plus another dozen or so in the garden), then 8 in the greenhouse, another 10 in the allotment greenhouse and 4 in the lean-to.

I can't remember how many varieties, but it's upwards of 20, many of them heritage.

Last year was a disaster and I lost virtually the entire crop. The year before, blight struck mid/late summer, but I still had plenty to freeze as sauce or puree, but didn't make any chutney. The year before that I had tons of the stuff, but as we having an extension we ended up with no kitchen!! The builders were taking home bags-ful most nights. (And I still have some of the sauce in the freezer!)

This year??

dtw

No blight for me, I think I've got about 25 to 30 plants.
Mainly plum, as I am going to make sauces and ketchup.

Unwashed

Don't grow them now.  Lost about 50 plants worth one year, fruits just ripening, blighted the lot of them.
