Recently on freecycle I have seen pets advertised. I am always unhappy about this. Last night I couldn't believe it. Someone had an 8month American bull terrier advertised. I googled ABT rescue & sent them an email with the details. He said it would only go to a good home but it had to be done quickly as he had split from his girlfriend & couldn't take it home with him. I am alone in thinking this shouldn't happen on freecycle.

There are lots of things happening with animals on the net. Rabbits and other animals are free. Some are even sold for food for snakes. When it comes to giving away a dog like a pit bull then it could become a very dangerous situation.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

I may be wrong Shirl but I think pit bull & American bull are 2 different breeds. Hope so.

thifasmom

yep no live animals are allowed to be posted for either offering/ wanting on my local freecycle.

The owners of the individual Freecycle sites have discretion to switch on/off a number of rules defined by Freecycle Central.  One of those rules is the Freecycling of animals.  The groups that I deal with are pretty evenly split between allowing and not allowing it.  One group offered members a vote on it a while back and the result was to allow it to continue.  I suppose it's no different than putting a card in a shop window or placing an ad in a local newspaper.

My local group doesn't allow it.

Mr Smith

This is totally against the grain with me I don't even like pet shops selling dogs or cats, bunnies or anything else fluffy, if you had to see an advert on FreeCycle for a dog it would be your 'Pit Bull'  and a typical dick head trying to get rid of it, >:(

Ishard

Im totally against it too as you never know to whom the animal is going and what they are going to do with it.  :'( GRRRRR!!!!

Many, many dogs have been known to have gone to the far east for breeding as its kudos to eat pedigree dogs.
This week I saw reported how a group of idiots set fire to a rabbit 'for fun'!!!!

All you need to do is phone up any breed rescue to see how we in Britain 'love' our pets.
I worked for our breed rescue and I have seen the horror that people will put dogs through and thats after paying up to a £1000.00 for them so God knows what they will do if the dog has been devalued by being 'free'.

Do Freecycle take any res[onsibility to what happens to these animals? I bet they dont.

Hector

to be fair to Freecycle it states in their rules no animals. It is usually very well moderated/monitored. Why not drop the mod a line?

As far as rabbits and guinea pigs are concerned there are lots of rescues that will have them if you can't cope with them. All of our pets have been rescued.

Hector I've been looking to find how to get in touch with the moderator but I can't find how to do it. I am computer thick though.
Shirl my 3 GPs are rescued ones. Chuffy, Lotty & Hetty.

Mr Smith

If it was left to me I would have people licenced before they could  keep any kind of livestock, dogs bunnies, cavies or even goldfish and the same applies to people having kids after what I have seen in the papers in the last couple of days, >:(

I'd tend to worry more about the dick head getting the dog!!!  :o
American bulls are still strong dogs and any dog can turn nasty. How's this bloke going to know it's going to a good home, anyone can lie. The dog could end up being used for fighting or badger baiting. In my opinion the dog should go to a recognised organisation such as the RSPCA.....along with a generous donation!

But has anyone considered what happens to the dog if its owner is not permitted to give it away!

Ishard

It should be put to sleep. Or sent to the relevant rescue society.

putting an animal to sleep just because some individual has had enough or their pet is very unfair on the animal. surely better to give it away.

Our local freecycle doesn't allow animals either fair enough, as for vetting, who does vet people when they buy animals, no one, you could buy a pet from a  pet shop, they dont vet you, well except your wallet that is.

I agree with mr smith, keeping animals, pets, livestock should require a licence of sorts and mandatory tagging, so if the animals is lost, abused, involved in an accident, it can be traced back to an owner

Dogs of 8 months are entering adolescence and can become quite difficult for a time.  It could be that the advertiser couldn't cope any more with this dog and used the 'splitting up' as an excuse.

Another thing - because Pitt bulls are a banned breed in the UK, they are often called by other names, like 'Irish Staffy' or 'American Staffy'.  There have been many cases of organised dogfights in Birmingham using this type of dog and some prosecutions have been brought.  It was reported in our local paper this week that because dogfighting is seen as just another sport in Pakistan, the Pakistani community here does not think it is wrong or cruel.  They think it is normal for dogs to fight, so why not make money out of it by gambling on the outcome.

I think the dogfighting problem will get out of hand here in Birmingham unless something is done soon.
