Allotments 4 All

I would like to grow horseradish but cannot find out where I can buy plant/seed - any ideas? ???

Marshalls do thongs (not the g-string variety) of horseradish, delivered late March for £6.99 for 5.  Seems pricey but they will grow in same spot for years.

Before you buy, put the word out on your site, you never know, someone might have some you can pinch.  It grows on long tap roots, and once you have it, you can never get rid of the rotten stuff!  It started to take over our old family allotment, and I was the only person who liked it!  

I sense that someone is not keen on it?

It doesn't always happen - ours has held to a metre square plot for 10 years or so. And you don't need to plant it - just get a thing/thong, grate and freeze. Enough for the year?  Or make it up with mayo - not cream - and fridge or freeze. Don't forget the vinegar!

One of my neighbours tried growing horseradish in what he thought was the safety of a bottomless bucket sunk in the ground.  He used what had grown in the bucket, only to find it had spread to his shrubbery and started coming up through his crazy paving. He had to spend two or three years using SBK to get rid of it.

Against everybody's advice I planted five H/Radish thongs last years in a raised bed with Hamburg Parsley - H/Radish one end, H/Parsley the other.   The H/Parsley failed, and I blamed it on the H/Radish.  

I followed Tim's recipe to make some up and it was such a chore.   We only used two plants, the other three I gave to our Greengrocer who loves it.    We've come to the conclusion that it's easier to buy a jar from Sainsbury's, in future.  

I've dug the soil out of the raised bed to try to find all the roots to put them into the skip.   Not an easy job, which I have had to abandon until the spring.   I've noticed roots going down deep and under the wall of the raised bed which I couldnt get.   I shall be watching that area with trepidation next year.   I reckon too that that particular bed will have to be left fallow next year - we'll see.

Oh grim! Good to be warned by these tales of woe though as my sweetheart LOVES horseradish and has been mithering to grow it on our plot. No-one else in our family would look at it and I certainly wouldn't be grateing away- not even as an act of devotion.

I did it a few years ago oh what a job,
but I can say I did it hee hee get your hubby to grate it.
Look on the bright side when your plants in the lottie are struggling for water that allways looks lush.
