I decided to get some King Edward spuds in asap. I saw some reduced in Homebase -£1.19 for a 2kg bag.

Thing is, I opened them up today and they are a little bit spongy, and some are damp.

Are they usable? Will they produce spuds that are safe to eat?

wouldn't worry, they go like that as they're producing new spuds, found out when I put my fingers through an old 'mummy' spud  ;D
don't see why it would be too late..Anyone else?

If you have the space put them in. Seems to me that spuds are nearly bomb proof! You bung a few in and, no matter how hard you try, there are always some you missed which come up again the next year. So put them in and wait and see, you paid for them so you might as well give them a chance!

Do they have sprouts on? They use a lot of water as they grow, and if they're not in the ground, the potato itself is the only source, so it shrivels. They'll be fine.

Well, thats good news. I still have some left over that I have not had time to plant - this gives me encouragement to get them in - hopefully this weekend (if it stops raining for long enough).

When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

the only thing i would like to add on a test recently on gardeners world to chit or not to chit Main crop potatoes suggested that it was better not to chit these as they produced a bigger heavier crop without chitting first .
first early and second early were better off chitting as the results proved to be a better method for getting a more successfull crop.

but they sound ok to me make sure the ground is wet enough when you put them in to get off to a good start with all the rain we are having shouldnt be a problem
