It's the time of year when we send a lot of cuttings to each other and I'd love to know how you all package your plantlets please; previously I've only wrapped the roots in dampened kitchen paper & a square of film or foil and bunged them in a jiffy :-\

My question was prompted by Debster congratulating JayB on the packaging of the cuttings she received, so wondered if there was a better way?

Hi Hyacinth, as requested;

I recently sent some rooted cuttings about 1' in length (bare rooted), after wrapping roots in kitchen paper secured with elastic bands and then wetted (you know the drill) I sealed them in a large tie handle bag, couple more lacky bands to keep all in place. This was then placed inside a ex-Christmas paper roll holder, (been saving them for ages) cut the lenght to match the cuttings. I then used an opened out brown envelope to wrap the tube and seal the ends. Sounds a lot, but quick to do really  ;)

ooh I also had some lovely little seedlings sent to me recently which were placed between two large bottle tops (Gin or whisky size) and then sealed with tape. They arrived snug and safe  ;D and a little bit happy!

I use small placcy water/soda bottles, cut in half, pop in cutting, tape round the middle and label over tape! My thought on it is if the postie see's they are cuttings, MAYBE he will keep them the right way up! ;D

Yup, interesting around a round top! ;D  Water not as much fun as gin or whiskey tho! ;)

I recieved some cuttings from DORIS packed like that they were in perfect condition when they arrived, excellent way to send things i do that now.

I do that and it works well :)

I watched an old GW recently & AT was taking cuttings & he laid a piece of polythene down put some compost along the bottom, laid the cuttings across then folded the bottom up & rolled it into a sausage then put an elastic band round it to keep it all together. He then watered it. I thought at the time it may be a way of sending plants by post.

I tape a matching pot onto the one with a cutting in it so both pots are joined at the rim, with the cutting protected by a sort of pot hat, tape them up and pop in a jiffy bag. Works well with little 9cm tot pots.
