Allotments 4 All

Hello everyone! Im new to this forum but I just found a website where you can swap produce in your local area. It would be good if something like that worked, its new though with not enough members yet so it needs some help getting started.

Aside from that, anyone got any advice on how to avoid tomato blight this year? My crop was totally infected last year!

I think everyones outside tomato's go blight last year. I'm not growing anymore outdoors.

Excuse my ignorance, im new to growing tomatoes, what causes blight and why has there been such a widespread problem with it? I live in France and everyone locally complained about it last year.

this is a cool idea and will check it out further.

i love to grow my toms outside and had my crop demolished in 2007 :'( so last year i covered my crop with a polythene roof with great success. it kept the tom plants dry from the most of the rain and i also systematically removed theleaves starting from the bottom during the growingseason once the fruit began to ripen. when the blight did hit my area early Sept, my neighbours toms succumbed by mid Oct and i picked my last toms the first week of Nov, i only lost on plant and that plant was the one the got wet the most due to the direction the wind blew the rain.

I had outdoor tomatoes going until the first frosts.  Bordeaux Mix.

I lost all my tomatoes in the main part of the garden to blight last year and 2007 but the ones on the patio under the eaves of the house did brilliantly.

In view of your expermiment thrifasmom, I think I'll get my husband to make a similar cover for mine as my little greenhouse will be full. Great photos... very handy for showing him 'how to.'  ;)

Welcome, Sophie. Cropswappers sounds likea great idea, although I'm not sure I'll have much to swap myself. Might join up just for the forumif that's ok.

Seriously folks, do you really need a website to swap your produce? Why not talk to the other plotholders on the site or a few local neighbours?

Theres nobody on there yet from the west midlands.

I tend to give away spare things to friends when I see them. .... I'm in the West Mids too.

Welcome to the site Sophie, it's usually too dry to get Smiths periods in most of France in the summer..  ::)

Has that cropswapper site closed down already?  You can't get into the forum today at all.

I'll register too, I am addicted to seeds and have loads but don't need 3500 carrot seeds per packet! (although I did just stumble across www.moreveg.co.uk which sell in small quantities which i will use next year.) so I love the local swap shop idea especially as our allotment is only one of four so not many people to swap with really!
