There I was doing a bit of wet Sunday work on my walking sticks. All pretty normal...and then! Doing my usual inpestion of sticks I came across this little hole.

Mmmm! Me thinks. I have a lodger. Hours of work down the tubes. But what made the hole? I thought I'd find out and stripped the bark and cut the now piece of fire-wood into pieces. Here we go!

kk, is it a death watch beetle lavi ?   wood burrowing wasp lavi ?  woodlouse lavi ?

 [ they don't eat wood do they ] ?     a maggot ?

I'm doing some searching to find what it is. The only clues that differ the larva are the type of flight hole, type of dust, burrowing habit and size.
So far it's not a furniture beetle, wavy edge or weavel. Possibly, by size, it's a death watch beetle, but they take 12-14 years to develope and there's hardly enough wood in a stick for that sort of time....Still checking.

I just had a look at my 'Collin's Guide to Wildlife in House and Home'. There are loads of possibilities, but keep trying!

Erm, well yes. It is a 'wood-worm'. Last count I came up with was 900 different sorts....still counting!

And yes, it's dead. I put it in a glass jar, I thought a wood box might be too much of a temptation.... :D
