Allotments 4 All

I expect that the frozen wastelands of the north will be suffering again this year. I have just read this in a local paper dated 1933.



Girl guide groups on the Island worked together to prepare Christmas stockings for children and elderly people living in distressed areas of the country.
Mrs Mynard from the Shanklin Rangers group organised the effort, in response to an advert in the magazine, The Guider, asking for them to get involved in the scheme.
The girls from the Island packed more than 250 stockings, which were sent to people in the North of England.

So what will you be sending me, Ace? ;D

Yah,  Cheshire Bird here.  Looking forward to all those scrummy Fortnum & Mason red cross parcels arriving.  Tarquin & I are particularly partial to a case of Crystal if you're wondering what to send.  We'll tie the whippets up in the stable block so the butler won't have to rescue your delivery man if they get a bit excited.

Oddly enough I would say we (in Huddersfield) have had it fairly easy here, a dusting but it has been b****y cold.

It must have been a thing of the past 'bad winters I can only recall about three bad ones in my lifetime.

I recall 1947!!  now that was snow!! I recall the drifts being up to the triangle on the road signs. I also recall walking waist deep (on level ground) to school.

Yet yesterday according to the paper, thousands of children were given a day off in anticipation of the snow that was forecast and all we got was about one inch of snow.

Were we made of sterner stuff in years gone by??

All i can say is,..... glad i live in the midlands ;D

London is the midlands from where I live, anywhere above is north.

I have just opened all the windows to freshen the house up, glorious sunshine outside. Bit nippy, 13.5C

I do have some old surgical stockings I could bung a few spuds and a manglewurzel in. Should go well with a bit of roadkill if you northeners are feeling the pinch.

We had Tues and Thurs off due to the snow. I work in Bury. There was 4-6 inches of snow. Many of the kids can walk in so it isn't a problem for them, but most of the staff are driving in from up to 30 miles away so that is where the issue lies. People just don't work local anymore.

About time ya got a new paper lad if that's how long it takes to get ya paper's delivered. :o      ;)

ACE, I was really intersted as my mum was a guide on the island during the war and may well have done it too, I must remember to ask her.  It will certainly bring back memories for her anyway, thanks. :)
