Hi all everyone who grows 'stuff' from seed know how handy plant labels are after all it's far too easy to forget what type of veg you have sown as most look alike pretty much like puppies really they all look cute to begin with! :D

Anyway back on track here's a really cheap way of getting really good plant labels for next to nothing and that work far better than milk carton labels that I used before.

Obtain one cheap venetian blind light colours work best (I brought mine from a car boot for 50p).

Strip the blind bare, cut the plastic slats into workable plant tag pieces about 4 inch long or bigger if you prefer, then make a point to one edge so the tag can easily be pushed into your plant pots, trays etc.

To write on them use a good quality permanent marker pen like a 'Sharpie' and unlike most plant tags there's plenty of room to have two lines on the tag for the plants name and type.

Here's mine below I used a 4ft wide blind and managed to get 527 tags from it I would have got even more but I wanted some longer ones.

What do you guys thinks? Hel.xxx.

Yes, a few of us on here already use this method, but thanks for the reminder for any newbies. You could actually do it for nothing if you've got an old blind or get one on freecycle.

Thanks Helofadigger, i did not think of the blinds. It's anoying trying to write on silly little plant labels.

I think i might have an old blind under the stairs, time to get sorting.

I just bought a nice light coloured wooden blind ofrom Ikea, it was 17 slats too long which adds up to roughly 120 nice wooden labels.

Must ask my son to save me any venetian blind when he is replacing with new blinds. He does manufacture  vertical blinds and I asked him to save me any odd bits of cord he has at the end of an order, very handy and strong for tying up plants.

Wow - I pay twice that price for my labels!

I don't know if it is a common problem but we could not find any 'self tie' labels for ages but found some stock at http://www.plant-labels.com/ who have them in a few colours.

I am sure they have a multitude of uses but we use this sort of label for clipping around pumpkin vines to indicate what has been used to cross polinate any flower. This type of label is expensive so if anyone hs any ideas as to how they could be made from recycled goods it would bee good news!

I got hold of some old louvre doors for nowt: take out the slats to make loads of 12 inch long labels.  Paint with white paint if you want to be posh.
