Doe anyone know of a good red onion that I can sow or plant now for an early crop next year? I didn't plant enough to last us very long, and we love them!

I think there are several new Autumn sowing/planting varieties appearing to augment the usual Japanese varieties. I've grown Electric from sets and found them a pretty good early red. Not great for storage though.

Look forward to hearing more on this as I've almost decided to stop doing an autumn planting.

I've tried Red Baron, electric and Radar from sets. To be honest I've not been very happy with any of them. Standard onions seem to over winter here much better. So I think I might skip the reds this year and try planting them in spring instead.

Another vote for Electric, I haven't had any bolt at all the past 2 years I've grown them! ;D

Where do you get them Deb? ps Andy got that receipt?

I had trouble getting hold of them last year, and ended up getting them in bags of 50 from an eBay seller, previously got them online fron Taylors I think. And yes, Andy has the receipt (somewhere!). 8)

                    My vote goes to electric red, most good garden centres should do them, a bit early yet I think. We got ours from The RHS shop at Wisley. Taylors are the firm that do them, make sure you buy HEAT TREATED one`s, these are supposed not to bolt. I planted a pack of 50 last Autumn & had 46 really good size onions that I harvested in mid June, there are still a few left & they have kept really well.

Must say thenonly time I grew onions over winter (white ones) they didn't do well, so I haven't bothered since, but I might just try some reds this year.

I grew red and white over wintering onions from sets from Marshalls. I can't remember what type they were but there was  only 1 red and 2 white types - and I tried them all! They all did really well, much better than the spring sown ones and from previous years I've found they keep well into the new year, by which time I've used them all up.
