Allotments 4 All

hi all still fairly new to a4a and lottie owning but i have been reading through the website since i joined
for tips/inspiration etc.
i kept reading about people raiding skips etc and couldn't get my head round it?
HOWEVER i am now a fully fledged skip dipper!! since beggining on the lottie i have been scavenging wood,plant pots,tyres etc i even came home today with a snapped conveyor belt from a concrete plant
(2 20 ft lengths that filled the trailer!!) to cover the ground that i haven't got to yet!.
WHAT HAVE YOU LOT DONE TO ME!!!!!

ha ha! - I love being a skip rat - got me a load of guttering today!! ;D

trailer came first! lucky to have it now i'm a scavenger got my eye on a big pile of pallets at the mo!

someone dumped a load of guttering in field near me and i got a much as i could to put round the lottie shed and gave a load to other lottie holders so they could get water from their sheds aswell. ;D

Hi Mike, yep you sound like an experienced pro now!! Skip raiding is a regular sport of mine, the dog gets walked on certain routes so we can look in skips!!! His legs are getting shorter as sometimes we have to do several trips!!!  ;D

I also like looking in skips! Today i got some wooden posts then the lady asked if i wanted some other bits in her garage  i of course said yes. They turned out to be interior plastic cladding which will be used in the bathroom when it is revamped.   I have also got two bikes which need back wheels replacing but my son is going to do that now he his off school.

As I walk to work and to the plots I like to vary my route to pass by any prime skip areas.  You can check out which homes are having work done and which shops are being refitted and check the same skip several times over a few days before the jobs finished.

I try to limit myself to long peices of wood or new wood, new unused building materials, plastic conduit and unusual/rare items.

Its also good to speak to scaffolders and builders, and anybody with useful stuff in their garden. I have huge quantities of debris netting and last week I got miles of blue pipe offcuts in three metre lengths. I built a patio seating area in the middle of my plot with blagged bricks, posts and planters.

Nobody I`ve asked for stuff has ever been rude but a couple of weeks ago I tried to blag an old aluminium cold frame from someones front garden and ended helping carry it around the back of the property. It turned out they had an allotment too.

I keep a trolley at home and in my allotment shed to help move large finds, and a couple of bungees and a length of rope in my rucsac just in case I spot something.

gets better by the day...pulled in the concrete plant today and one of the drivers asked me if i knew anyone that wanted a greenhouse!!!!
it took me all of about 1/2 a second to reply "YES!"
the even better news is it's free and in very good condition!

I havnt got a lottie and skips are like alladins caves, theres always something useful in them
